‘Career Ready Revolution’ to redefine the modern university experience

17 April 2026

Southampton Solent University has today unveiled its bold new Career Ready Revolution, a campaign and institutional shift designed to transform how higher education prepares students for the realities of today’s world of work.

At a time when the value of a traditional university education is under intense scrutiny, Solent is taking a bold stand. The Career Ready Revolution represents a fundamental reimagining of course design, teaching and industry engagement, ensuring every Solent graduate leaves university with the skills, experience and confidence to succeed in their chosen career.

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, Sarah Jones, said:

“At Solent, we’re not waiting for higher education to catch up with the world as it changes, we’re rewriting it. We want students to come here with the confidence that we’re prioritising their future and we haven’t been afraid to rethink the way we deliver our courses to help achieve that.”

The Career Ready Revolution is built around five core principles that are embedded across every undergraduate programme:

  • Practice‑led learning in every module, ensuring students gain hands on experience from the start

  • Teaching that gives students time, most courses will be delivered through block teaching, allowing students to study one module at a time leading to deeper learning and making it easier for students to balance university alongside everything else that matters to them.

  • Strong professional and industry links, integrated into course delivery giving our students a head start in their career.

  • Outstanding learning opportunities, supporting Solent’s position as the best university in Hampshire for learning opportunities* and the only one of fourteen institutions to be awarded Triple TEF Gold for teaching excellence and student outcomes. (*National Student Survey 2025)

From live industry briefs and work experience to industry standard facilities and real‑world assessments, almost every course has been redesigned over the last few months to reflect the skills employers value.

The launch comes amid growing concern that higher education has not kept pace with the realities of the labour market, with many graduates leaving university without the experience or direction needed to enter their chosen professions. Solent’s Career Ready Revolution directly addresses this challenge through continuous review and innovation.

At Southampton Solent, we won’t stand still. The world of work keeps changing, and we make sure our courses change with it.

That means our courses are constantly reviewed and modernised, so what our students learn reflects what employers actually need, not what mattered five or ten years ago.

They will graduate with the skills that really make a difference, whether that’s AI, digital skills, creative thinking, or entrepreneurship, not just for their first job, but for the careers they will build over time.

We will also continue to invest in industry-standard facilities and technologies that break down the barrier between the classroom and the workplace, so when our students leave Solent they don’t just have a degree – they have the confidence, experience and skills to step straight into what comes next.

Solent has exceptional learning environments and professional level opportunities. This includes the recent opening of the SMART Centre at the University’s East Park Terrace campus, a state‑of‑the‑art facility equipped with cutting edge tools to support students across a wide range of technical, maritime, engineering and digital disciplines.

Students also benefit from access to elite sporting facilities, industry standard television and media production studios, and opportunities to work at the very highest level while studying, including supporting major global events such as Glastonbury Festival and London Fashion Week.

The Career Ready Revolution is aimed primarily at undergraduate prospects and applicants, supporting recruitment and conversion for 2026 entry, and speaks directly to students seeking a university experience that delivers clear career outcomes and real value.

By placing employability, adaptability and real‑world experience at the heart of every degree, Southampton Solent University is positioning itself at the forefront of a new model of higher education, one that puts students’ futures first.
