Clearing offers success at Solent

5 August 2025

Boasting the best National Student Survey (NSS) scores in Hampshire*, prospective students applying through Clearing can be confident of success at Southampton Solent University.

A-level results day can be both an exciting and worrying time, and Solent is ready to reassure anyone looking to kick-start their journey in higher education that Clearing is open and the team are on-hand to help.

Clearing is an accessible and alternative route to securing a place at university. It's a great path for anyone who receives unexpected A-level results, decides to apply to university past the UCAS deadline, or hasn't been accepted to their first choice. Deputy Head of UK Recruitment, Outreach and Events, Rhys Phillips, says:

"Exams are done, results day is around the corner and for many, this can be a time of reflection, realisation and, sometimes, a complete change of plan. Whether it's a different course that's caught the interest, life throwing a curveball, or results that didn't quite match expectations, Clearing is here - and so are we.

"At Southampton Solent University, we know that no two journeys to university are the same. Clearing isn't just about finding a last-minute option; it's about finding the right option - even if it's not the one someone originally had in mind.

"Each year, thousands of people across the UK take a new direction through Clearing. It's a route that opens up opportunities and makes higher education more accessible to everyone. Whatever the reason, Solent is here with advice, support, and a wide range of places still available across our courses. We're here to listen, answer questions, and help find the right path."

Solent is a proudly accessible university, with graduates who came through Clearing now thriving in their chosen fields. From the creative industries and law, to business and sport, Solent has a track record of equipping its students with the tools to succeed in whatever industry they choose. BA (Hons) Sports Journalism graduate, Will Hewlett - who reported from the biggest golf tournament in the world during his second year, grained production experience at Glastonbury Festival, and is now preparing to be a host at The Hundred - says:

"My Clearing journey was easy and effective, and it certainly helped me go into my first day at university with confidence and clarity.

"My three years at university have turned out to be the best three years of my life. My studies have directly influenced my life inside and away from university via amazing work experiences, the best lecturers, meeting lifetime friends and now, post-graduation, opening doors into the industry I want to pursue a career in.

"I have never heard or seen anyone at university feel that applying through Clearing had made them feel less as a student. In fact, it can work positively for students as they joined later, worked hard, had fun and then look back at it with a smile on their face."

Clearing at Solent opened on Saturday 5 July and remains open until Monday 20 October. Anyone wanting to explore Solent University's campus - which boasts industry-standard facilities - can book onto the Clearing open day on Saturday 16 August here.
