As A level results day approaches, Solent University, Southampton invites prospective students to Embrace the New this August through Clearing.
The wait for exam results can be a nerve-racking time for both young people and those around them. While uncertainty can loom large for those seeking to go to university, it's important to remember there are lots of accessible options for applicants.
Solent is an inclusive community that is proud to boast a diverse student population, many of whom are the first in their family to go to university. While the route to university isn't always linear, Solent are experts when it comes to guiding potential students through Clearing.
Not familiar with the process? Clearing is an alternative route to securing a place at university if someone receives different grades to what they expect, their first choice doesn't go through, or they are applying past the original UCAS deadline.
The process might seem daunting, but staff at Solent are ready and waiting to guide anyone interested in university through the process. Debbie House, Head of Recruitment, Admissions and Widening Participation at Solent, says:
"The period between sitting exams and receiving results can sometimes bring about a change of heart in choice of institution, or course, and other aspects of life can interfere with original plans. For some, results day itself brings unexpected grades. Whatever a person's reason for pursuing Clearing, the most important thing to remember is: Solent is here for you.
"Every year, thousands of students apply to university through Clearing. It's a great alternative route for many, and one that enhances accessibility to higher education. At Solent, we have a dedicated team of staff trained and ready to support people through it, alongside current students who can offer unique guidance and insight.
"We are at the end of a phone, reachable on WhatsApp, and available via social media platforms. However someone wants to get in touch with us, we will be waiting with the opportunities our University can offer."
Solent's Clearing hotline opened on Friday 5 July and is available until Monday 7 October, which is the last date to enrol for September entry.
Anyone wanting to explore the Solent campus and speak to lecturers and students, can book onto the University's Clearing Visit Day on Saturday 17 August here.
Solent is a TEF Gold University, recognising that student experiences and outcomes are typically outstanding; their student and graduate community is proof of how anyone can thrive after Clearing. From graduates going onto exciting careers in broadcast journalism, to current students getting hands-on experience at some of the world's biggest sporting events, Clearing is just the start of a transformative university experience. Amy Sutton, a Multimedia Journalism graduate who is now working at ITV, says:
"I didn't get the grades that I needed for my course, and I'd been really poorly so I'd missed one or two of my A level exams, so although I had the coursework it just still missed the mark. I'd visited Solent on an open day, and I had my heart absolutely set on going there, so my first and only option after opening my results was to get on to Clearing and try to make it happen.
"During the Clearing process the staff were so kind and encouraging. I recall it being quite quick and it certainly brightened up what was really, at first, a stressful day. So, my advice would be to just have patience. Have a clear vision of what you want but be open to discussing new possibilities."
Amy was selected as one of Universities UK's 100 Faces - a nationwide campaign celebrating first in the family students. Read more about her experience at Solent here.
