Solent celebrates Blades’ success

25 March 2026

Southampton Solent University is celebrating the remarkable success of Weston Park Blades after the team clinched the Netball National Championship for the first time in their history.

Blades have played the last two seasons at Solent University’s state-of-the-art sports complex, which has served as their home court throughout their title-winning campaign.

This Sunday, Solent will host Blades’ Premier Division 1 team for their final match of the season against Oldham. Staff and students are expected to turn out in force to celebrate the team’s achievement and show their support one last time this year.

Iain Molyneux, Sports Education Partnership Manager, said the partnership had been an exciting addition to the University’s sporting landscape.

“We are incredibly proud to have played a part in Blades’ historic season.”

“Their energy, professionalism and determination have been inspirational to everyone who has watched them compete at Solent. This championship title is fully deserved, and we’re thrilled to welcome them home this weekend to celebrate with our community.”

Honorary Club President Sarah Wakeman said the move to Solent has strengthened the club both on and off the court.

“The facilities, the staff and the support from students has created an environment where our athletes can thrive. We’re incredibly grateful for the way Solent has embraced our club in the last two seasons.”

The collaboration has proven to be an excellent fit, with Weston Park Blades athletes benefiting from Solent’s modern sports environment. The leadership of coaches Sheonah Forbes and Jan Crabtree has also resonated strongly with students throughout the season.

Solent University’s sports complex is home to high‑level netball and basketball facilities, including dedicated fan seating and courtside broadcast capabilities. Blades’ presence on campus has enabled students to gain hands‑on experience across multiple disciplines. Sport and Health students have supported the team through sports therapy, strength and conditioning and performance testing, while Sports Journalism students have learned valuable skills in live sports reporting and streaming.

The University is encouraging fans, supporters and members of the community to join Sunday’s home finale and celebrate the team’s league title win, with the trophy for the National Premier League to be presented by England Netball.
