Solent University is thrilled with the announcement that Southampton is one step closer to becoming UK City of Culture 2025 after securing a place on the shortlist.
The UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has confirmed that Southampton has been shortlisted for the coveted title, with Bradford, Durham, and Wrexham also in the running.
The finalists were whittled down from 20 initial bids to eight outstanding longlist applications. The next phase of the competition will see judges visiting each of the shortlisted locations and the winner of the title will be announced in May 2022.
Through unwavering support and collaborative partnerships, Solent has been and continues to be fully engaged in the efforts to have Southampton, a city rich in heritage, creativity and opportunities, crowned City of Culture 2025.
After receiving the news, Professor Karen Stanton, Solent University’s Vice-Chancellor says: “As a key partner in the city’s bid, we are delighted with this incredible achievement. Solent is proud to be an integral part of Southampton and will continue to fly the flag for the city. Through our partnerships and commitment in supporting the bid, we are driving awareness, engagement and long-term impact for all our communities. Achieving this prestigious status would create a very positive impact on the area.”
