Southampton Solent University achieves highest ever ranking in Guardian University Guide 2026

13 September 2025

Southampton Solent University has been named among the top ten highest risers in the Guardian University Guide 2026, achieving its highest-ever position in the national rankings at 58.

The strong performance comes on the back of excellent results in the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS). Solent was ranked as the best university in Hampshire for Learning Opportunities, Teaching on My Course, Assessment and Feedback, and Academic Support — reflecting the University’s commitment to delivering an outstanding student experience.

Several subject areas stood out in this year’s Guide, with Law, Interior Design, and Film Production and Photography ranking sixth, sixth and ninth in the country respectively.

Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University, Professor James Knowles, said:

“This is a testament to the direction that our university is heading. We are determined to provide our students with all the skills and experience that they need to succeed in life, and I am delighted that this has been recognised by our upward trajectory in the Guardian’s rankings.

“As we work towards our 2035 strategy, I believe that our practice-led focus will continue to translate into Solent graduates appearing at the pinnacle of their chosen professions. I hope to see even more students making that journey with us in the coming years.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Sarah Jones, added:

“We are delighted that the quality of teaching and student support at Solent has been recognised so strongly. Our staff are dedicated to creating engaging and inclusive learning experiences, helping students to achieve their potential and prepare for successful futures.

“These results reflect the progress we are making and our continued commitment to delivering excellence in education.”

Other factors contributing to Solent’s impressive rise included strong performance in satisfaction with teaching and satisfaction with assessment, building on the University’s achievement of a prestigious TEF Gold award in 2023. These results highlight the dedication of Solent’s academic and professional services staff and demonstrate the value of its student-focused approach.

The recognition also comes at a milestone moment for the University, as Solent prepares to celebrate the 20th anniversary of achieving university status in 2025. Alongside this celebration, Solent has launched a new civic charter and organisational strategy, designed to drive growth and strengthen its role at the heart of Southampton and Hampshire.
