A Southampton Solent University student has won a prestigious national award from the Football Writers’ Association (FWA), highlighting the University’s continued strength in developing emerging sports journalism talent.
Jake Pearce, a BA (Hons) Sports Journalism student, has been named the Hugh McIlvanney Student Football Writer of the Year at the Football Writers’ Awards. He received the accolade for a feature exploring the career of former professional footballer Danny Butterfield, who famously scored a remarkable six-minute hat-trick in unusual circumstances.
Jake’s success marks the latest in a series of achievements for Solent students, who have now been recognised by the FWA three times in the past five years. Previous winners Sajidur Rahman and Jacob Tanswell also earned national acclaim during their time at the University.
Kevin O’Donovan, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Sports Journalism, said:
“It’s genuinely great to see Jake take this award for his writing. Under the fine direction of our very experienced colleague Graham Hiley, sports writing is one of the main elements of the course from day one. Jake has really responded to this teaching, building on his already evident talent. We’re very proud of him, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he’ll win next.”
Jake has also gained valuable industry experience during working experience stints with Eastleigh FC and Winchester FC this year, further strengthening his practical skills alongside his academic studies.
He said: “I’m incredibly proud to receive this award, and it’s been great to develop my skills throughout my time at Solent. The support from lecturers and the opportunities to gain hands-on experience have been invaluable, and my placement with Eastleigh has given me a real insight into the industry.”
The BA (Hons) Sports Journalism course at Southampton Solent University equips students with comprehensive training across broadcast, digital, print and social media, preparing graduates for a wide range of career paths. All students undertake placements as part of their studies, ensuring they graduate with real-world experience.
Solent graduates have gone on to work at leading broadcasters including Sky Sports, BBC Sport, ESPN and talkSPORT, as well as national newspapers such as The Daily Mail and The Times. Others have secured roles within the media offices of professional sports clubs, alongside positions in creative agencies and organisations across the industry.
