Success for international research conference

8 September 2025

In the first week of September, researchers from all over the world visited Southampton Solent University for the ESU 2025 Conference and Doctoral Programme.

Supported by the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB), ESU champions entrepreneurial learning and research. It aims to strengthen networks in this field, including among those who are in the early stages of their career, and gives researchers a platform for publication.

By bringing together researchers, PhD supervisors and doctoral students from institutions all around the globe, this conference cultivates meaningful cultural and knowledge exchange. Delegates at this year’s conference visited Southampton Solent University from countries including France, Estonia, Italy, Canada and as far afield as New Zealand.

Taking place Monday 1 to Friday 5 September, delegates took part in plenary sessions, presentations and cultural activities in the city. The week-long event was opened by Professor Cathy Barnes, Solent’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, Academic Strategy and Planning. She says:

“As a university, entrepreneurship is in our DNA. We’re committed to empowering our learning and research community to be bold in their thinking and pursue their ideas with confidence. With this in mind, Solent University is perfectly placed to play host to the ESU Conference.

“It has been fantastic meeting researchers from universities both near and far, witnessing first-hand the way this global research community champions one another.”

Solent University is home to a range of research groups, including Regenerative Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. The group’s research themes include women in entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intentions and business ethics.
