TV Production Students Gain Live Sports Experience with Globecast

3 June 2025 • by Solent press team

For the first time, TV Production students from Southampton Solent University have been invited onto the track at the British Rally Championship to gain experience of working at live sporting events, securing their first broadcast credits on ITV.

Leading broadcast facility Globecast has been giving students the opportunity to get close to the action and work alongside industry professionals to hone their camera, sound, vision mixing, editing, and social media content creation skills at a fast-paced sporting event.

Final-year TV Production student Lily Scott has been working with the social media team to help collate footage and highlight the best bits for the programme editors. When time allows, she has also been helping to edit highlights to send out to the British Rally Championship social team and ITV for their roundup.

Lily has relished the chance to work with the Globecast team: “The work schedule can be really challenging – there are times when there is nothing to do as you wait for the footage, and then it all comes back at once and it’s non-stop. But the highlight is seeing my name in the credits at the end of the programmes. My first TV credit is on ITV!”

Following graduation this summer, Lily will be looking for post-production opportunities on documentary and community productions.

Looking back at her three years at university, she says, “We've been offered a lot in terms of industry opportunities where we can get credits and experience – something I wouldn't have been able to do if I wasn’t at Solent. I've also loved having lecturers who are passionate about what they do and who look out for us. They have always been incredibly supportive and enthusiastic about what they teach.”

This latest real-world learning opportunity has grown out of an ongoing relationship between the University’s TV Production courses and Globecast. Recognising the importance of offering students the opportunity to gain real-world experience, the leading livestream company is happy to identify events where students can put their newly learned skills to the test.

Gary Champion, Head of Production and Content at Globecast, says, “We are happy to offer students this type of work experience. They get a taste of what will be expected of them when they graduate, guidance and tips from the professionals, and the opportunity to network with potential employers – benefitting both the students and the industry.”

Solent University’s BA (Hons) TV Production is a ScreenSkills-accredited course that prides itself on offering a plethora of practical experiences developed from strong industry connections.

Senior Lecturer Kate O’Driscoll says, “Working alongside professionals at companies like Globecast offers fantastic real-world learning opportunities for our current students and helps prepare them for their careers with all the required skills to successfully transition from student to professional."
