University strengthens civic partnerships to drive city growth

The event highlighted the collaborative spirit that defines the city’s approach to economic development and innovation, with discussions focusing on Southampton’s growth potential and the key role that Solent plays in developing skills, fostering enterprise, and driving forward new ideas.

As part of the evening Councillor Alex Winning, Leader of Southampton City Council, signed Solent University’s new Civic Charter. The charter is formal pledge to work together to enhance Southampton’s local and national reputation.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Knowles, said:

“It was inspiring to hear so many exciting ideas from across our city. Solent’s position at the very heart of Southampton reflects the deep connection we have with our community — and the important role we play in shaping the city and region’s future.

“I’m grateful to Councillor Winning for supporting our Civic Charter, the Council are a key partner as we look to achieve the goals set out in our 2035 Strategy.”

The Charter aligns closely with Solent’s 2035 Strategy, which sets out an ambition for the university to become the UK’s leading practice-led institution within the next decade.

Guests also had the opportunity to explore some of the university’s cutting-edge research projects, as Solent’s research team showcased innovative work spanning a range of sectors. These projects demonstrated the depth of expertise and creativity that make Solent a key contributor to the region’s knowledge economy.

The event underlined the university’s continuing mission to act as a hub for innovation, collaboration, and civic pride — helping Southampton to thrive as a vibrant, forward-looking city.
