Why did you decide to do a postgraduate course?

I studied a BA in History. At the time, I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career. My first job was in PR, and I very quickly realised this wasn’t for me. I stumbled across editing, and realised that I could make a career doing something I loved. So, I took a gamble and went to Solent for two years. It was an investment in my future, and it gave me the time I needed to hone my craft to compete in a very competitive industry.

What was the best thing about your course?

The best thing about studying at Solent was the access to equipment and opportunities on offer. These combined gave me an edge over the competition, giving me the toolkit to progress my craft and learn on the job. If we’re talking about what got me to where I am, it’s sitting in the Solent edit suites everyday learning, and then taking out cameras to practice.

What’s the most important thing you've learned?

You get out what you put in. I believe that’s true at university, and in life. The more you learn the software, and practice, the better you’ll become. This will remain true after Solent. Your work ethic will determine if you achieve your career goals.

My postgraduate degree at Solent prepared me for an actual career in editing. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am.

Have your studies helped you with your current role?

Learning the technical skills was essential. Editing quickly is so important, especially when you’re with a client. You need to be fast and the only way to perform under pressure is to practice. Solent is the perfect place for that, with free access to editing suites and equipment.

Did you do any work experience as part of your course?

Yes, I got involved with cutting the Showcase Cinemas advert with the University, along with some BBC ONE documentaries for Inside Out. These experience helped me land my first job. Practical work experience is the most important thing you can achieve at Solent, but you have to put yourself forward.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of studying a postgraduate course?

This course is great for those who want to pursue a career in film, and you'll be given access to all the opportunities you need to succeed. But you’ll get out what you put in. So I’d recommend you freelance on the side with Solent Productions, the University's in-house creative agency, and put your studies to practice as soon as you can.

Tell us a bit about your experience as a postgraduate student?

The industry can be gruelling, but it can be incredibly fulfilling, and you can achieve great success. It all comes down to three things: talent, contacts, and luck. Solent will help you build the skills, the reel, the contacts and can open some doors for you. But it’s up to you to grab the opportunities on offer.
