Frequently asked questions
Eligibility and suitability
Yes. We welcome applications from international students. As with all applicants, if you can demonstrate that you are currently competing, or have the potential to compete, at the appropriate level, we strongly encourage you to apply.
Application and selection process
After applications close, a selection panel will review all submissions against the programme’s criteria and Solent’s values. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to deliver a short presentation and take part in a brief interview to further explore their suitability and sporting ambitions. Final decisions will be shared ahead of the programme starting in early October.
Programme services and benefits
All places on the programme come with a bursary, awarded at either Bronze, Silver or Gold tier, depending on your level of play and sporting costs.
We encourage athletes to use their bursary to support their sporting journey; this could include travel, competition costs, equipment, or help with living expenses.
Representing the University
If you'd like to represent the university in BUCS competitions, we would encourage you to do so, and we’re here to support you. BUCS can offer some amazing university experiences from competing as part of a team, to being part of a vibrant community of students who love sport. For many, these opportunities lead to some of the most memorable moments and lasting friendships of their university life.
That said, we also understand that BUCS may not always align with your performance pathway, especially if you're training or competing at an elite level. In some cases, participating in BUCS could risk overtraining or injury, or simply may not be the best fit for your progression in the sport. In those situations, we’ll support you as an individual and may encourage you to prioritise your club or NGB competition schedule, depending on what’s best for your development.
Our approach is flexible and athlete-focused, we want to make sure you get the most out of both your sport and your time at university to support your ambitions.
