Since 1856 we’ve been transforming lives, providing education and training for people regardless of their background. Our commitment to supporting residents in accessing life-long learning is reflective of our ethos in supporting people to achieve their best. Through providing an open environment that shares skills and knowledge we’re helping to build successful, working lives.

Our commitments

  1. Provide open access to academic knowledge and expertise through our series of free public lectures, cultural events and civic engagement activity. We will aim to ensure these activities reach our closest neighbours, with 25% of attendees and activities centred on the SO14 postcode.

  1. Support employers and industry to develop learning and development opportunities that reflect current and future employment trends. In line with the latest push to grow the number of apprentices we will train 250 apprentices during the 19/20 academic year.

  1. Work with schools, colleges and partner institutions to collectively raise career aspiration and attainment. We will inspire 3000 young people living within Southampton’s most deprived neighbourhoods during 2019/20.

  1. Provide students with real-world experience, including placement opportunities and live briefs that support local charities and community organisations.

The Insight Series

The Insight Series is a series of free public lectures for staff, students, alumni and the local community. The lectures put a spotlight on the biggest issues facing society, sharing our academic knowledge alongside community expertise. We offer 3 public lectures throughout the year, aligned to our priorities within the Civic Charter. Details on our upcoming events can be found on the events section of the website. Below you can access some of our previous public lectures.
