Solent University’s professionally accredited electronic engineering degree apprenticeship is your chance to develop your specialist skills and knowledge – and earn a degree while you work – giving your career a can help you to turn these interests into a lucrative and engaging career.
With a broad curriculum covering everything from analogue and digital electronics to contemporary embedded systems, signal processing technologies and modern communications, you will be well placed to move into a range of specialist roles – research and development, maintenance engineering, electronic design, telecommunications and much more.
In the first year, students develop a solid foundation in maths and circuitry before getting to grips with analogue, digital and microcomputer systems. The latter half of the year is focused on developing an understanding of industry software, key professional skills and manufacturing techniques.
These proficiencies will form a solid foundation for the second and third year, where you will program embedded systems and study advanced data communications, carry out your own research and undertake a major practical project tailored to your unique working environment and workplace.

Who is this course for?
The Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Degree Apprenticeship is ideally suited for staff and managers at the start or middle of their engineering career, who want to gain additional skills and knowledge in the fast moving electronics design and application area.

Apprentices will have access to our up-to-date electronics and manufacturing laboratories, which are incorporated into practical sessions in every module. Library facilities are also available, with specialist software workstations and electronic on-site and remote book access.

What you'll study
Core modules
Applied Mathematics
On this module you will learn how to apply a range of mathematical techniques to realistic engineering problems. You will use basic algebra and solve simultaneous equations and equations of straight lines to answer engineering problems around linked variables in mechanics and electronics.
Introduction to Electronics
This module is designed to introduce you to the electrical and electronic principles necessary to analyse circuit behaviour and design. It also provides the foundation for further study of more specialised electrical/electronic engineering techniques used later in your course.
Analogue and Digital Electronics
This module sits within the circuit theme and is designed to give you an introduction to the basic terminology, concepts and devices used in electronic circuits.
Manufacturing Principles
This module helps you to develop an awareness of the factors affecting the selection of materials and processes used in manufacturing a product. It does this by comparing the attributes of materials and the suitability of processes in the light of the external factors that need to be considered when developing the product design specification.
Microprocessor Systems
Almost all modern engineering systems contain microcomputer systems, which are especially important in the development of industry 4.0. This module is designed to introduce you to this area and develop your knowledge of the theory and practice of structured programming through high-level language.
Professional Engineering Skills
This module will introduce you to the profession of engineering. This includes both theoretical and professional skills relating to the role of the professional engineer and also supports your transition into higher education.
Successful apprentices will graduate with a:BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering
How you'll study
You will learn through a combination of directed learning, collaborative learning and guided learning. You will also make use of the University's online learning platform Solent Online Learning (SOL).You may be assessed by a combination of:
- Coursework
- Assignments
- Individual and group projects
- Practical activities
- Reports
- Written exams
- Final major project
- Individual presentations
- End-point assessment
Students are assessed through a combination of academic assignments and occupational standards assessments. Coursework assignments can include presentations, essays, exams, case studies, practical assessments, and reflective accounts.
Apprentices area also expected to go through an end-point assessment within three months of completing the course.

Fees and finance
Businesses with an annual payroll above £3million will be classed as a levy paying employer and will be able to use funds accrued in their digital apprenticeship service (DAS) account for payment of the training. Please contact us for guidance on fees if you are a non-levy employer which will cover at least 95% of the costs.

Apprentices pay nothing towards their course fees
The course fees will be covered by your employer.

Earn while you learn
As an apprentice you'll earn while working and studying towards your degree.
Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.
Entry Requirements
To study for an apprenticeship, you must be employed by a sponsoring organisation. The specific entry requirements will be agreed with your employer.
Individual employers will set their own entry requirements in terms of prior academic qualifications and experience. Typically candidates will have attained A-level standard or equivalent in maths and at least one further STEM-based subject, such as physics, ICT, computing or electronics, and will have English language at GCSE (grade C or above).

What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship offers a unique blend of work experience and academic study. Candidates on an apprenticeship will work a paid job while simultaneously working towards a relevant qualification in their chosen field.
Apprentices are employees with a contract of employment which offers the same benefits and protections as any other employee. Apprentices will typically work for four days of the week, using the remaining day to attend classes and study.
Higher degree apprenticeships
Solent offers a diverse range of higher and degree apprenticeships, all of which are underpinned with recognised and transferable degree qualifications (BA, BSc, etc).
Higher apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships give employees the opportunity to upskill in their chosen field or retrain for a new career while working.
