About the course

Are you passionate about the web? Would you like to help businesses reach and implement creative online solutions? Solent University’s MSc Digital Design programme teaches students a wide range of industry relevant skills including user experience design, front-end web development and digital marketing.

As a conversion course, this master’s degree is well suited to students from diverse academic backgrounds. The course will help you to develop sought-after digital skills and prepare you for a range of careers after graduation.

Students are also able to tailor the course to their own personal career ambitions through a research project. Many use this piece of work to springboard the start of their career or a further research study.

Students are supported to gain a range of transferable skills throughout the course. These include project management, critical thinking, organisation and presentation skills. The professional issues and practise module helps prepare students for the workplace by looking at the wider computing industry and the contexts in which digital skills can be used most effectively.

Learning is aided by a range of industry standard equipment. Facilities include high-spec computer labs, device testing labs and a usability lab with eye tracking facilities.

This conversion master’s course is ideally suited to students from a number of academic backgrounds who have a strong interest in learning web design and digital development technologies.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2021/22 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £8,700
International full-time fees: £14,300

Students in receipt of a postgraduate loan from the Student Loan Company are typically able to pay their tuition fees via instalments.

Following the UK government's confirmation that EU students will no longer be eligible for home fee status benefits, we've made the decision to keep EU tuition fees the same as UK tuition fees for 2021 entry.

Bursaries and scholarships

Solent University offers a range of bursaries and scholarships that provide financial assistance or waive fees for tuition or accommodation. Each bursary or scholarship has specific eligibility criteria. Check out our bursaries and scholarships pages to find out more.

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Honours degree at 2:2 or higher in any discipline, or extensive industrial experience in this area.

  • Applicants should be able to show an interest in learning web design and development technologies.
  • Qualifications equivalent to the above may also be considered – contact the University for further information.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking
  • TOEFL IBT 92 with minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 19 in reading, listening and speaking
  • Duolingo English Language Test - 110 overall with minimum 90 in each component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

Pre-Sessional English programme

The University also offers a Pre-Sessional English Language Course for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Applications for postgraduate courses can be made at any time prior to the start of the course. However, we strongly recommend you apply at your earliest convenience.

  • Certified transcripts of qualifications, including English language proficiency if non-UK student

Alumni discount

Solent alumni could be eligible for up to a 50% reduction of tuition fees if returning to study a postgraduate course. The discount applied will be dependent on your undergraduate degree classification as follows:

Solent Alumni with a:

  • First (1.1) will be offered a 50% discount to study at PG level
  • 2.1 or 2.2 will be offered a 20% discount to study at PG level

The discount applied will be based on the most recently completed course.

If you are currently a student at Solent University and are continuing on without a break in your studies, your discount will be automatically applied on your return.

If are not following directly on from a course at Solent University, but have studied with us in previous years, you will need to register for the alumni discount.

What you'll study

Core modules and CATS points:

  • Research Methods (15)
    This module will initially introduce the student to core methodological approaches.  It will then examine a range of specific research methods, which are essential to underpin good research, as well as exploring some of the tools which are used in the processing and analysis of datasets.
  • Professional Issues and Practice (15)
    The module will look at standards of practice, not as a set of static documents but as a dynamic set of potential achievements, as for example envisaged by TickITplus and CMMI.
  • Pilot Project (15)
    The Pilot Project module builds on concepts delivered across the Masters degree in technical and research areas, and is designed to develop the student’s research skills by undertaking a pilot study which will then lead onto a larger scale study in the Research Project module.  
  • Research Project (45)
    The MSc project is the culmination of the Masters experience and draws on both the technical skills learned through the taught components of the course, and the research skills developed through the Research Methods and Pilot Project modules.
  • Digital Design Fundamentals (15)
    This module links the skill sets gained in user centred design research and user experience to create design concepts and interactive prototypes to offer clearly focused design solutions.
  • Digital Design Management (15)
    This module will explore the roles, contexts and methodologies needed to manage a successful digital project.  
  • Web Technologies (15)
    This module gives graduates from non-computing backgrounds a thorough grounding in web development.
  • Usability & UX  Design (15)
    This module aims to develop an understanding of the human-digital interface and the part it plays in the design and construction of artefacts (software-based or other) which are usable, attractive, efficient and effective.
  • Digital Marketing (15)
    This module aims to provide students with the underpinning skills and knowledge necessary in planning digital marketing campaigns within an in-house corporate or client/agency framework.
  • Computer Fundamentals (15)
    This module introduces students to computer fundamentals and related concepts.

Career support


Students have access to high-spec computer labs and make use of the latest design and development programs.

Students will test applications in our new device laboratory - a special test area integrated within one of our existing software development spaces. This arrangement allows you to test your website designs and apps on real equipment, ensuring they perform as expected on the target platforms.

Students work on high-spec computers from Alienware and Apple before testing their projects in our eye-tracking and device labs. Small group teaching allows for tailored support, helping students to shape the course to their own ambitions.
