Passionate about technology? Hoping to pursue a career in IT? Solent University’s applied computing top-up programme is ideally suited to students who want to upgrade their existing computing qualifications into a full honours degree. Students study intensively over one year to build the advanced programming, web development, systems analysis and networking skills required by graduate employers.

Solent University’s applied computing curriculum focuses on building the practical skills and advanced understandings that modern IT employers require. Students study under the guidance of experienced academics who provide technical tuition alongside vital industry context.

Students are able to tailor the programme to their personal career ambitions by choosing from a range of optional units. These optional units cover subjects including security management, mobile app development, network management, web design, human computer interaction and artificial intelligence for games. These optional units supplement a final research project, where students will conduct in-depth study into an area of their choice.

The course also equips students with a range of transferable project management, problem solving and analytical skills. These skills can serve students well in a range of different careers.

Top-up degree

This course is ideally suited to learners with relevant qualifications at FHEQ level 5. Learning is supported by the use of industry standard facilities. These include high-spec IT suites, network security laboratories and a professional usability lab.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2019/20 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £12,875 per year

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

  • Relevant HND/foundation degree pass with Merit Overall (55 per cent) or 240 CATS points from a relevant three-year degree.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


Learning is enabled by the latest professional equipment. Facilities for applied computing students include high-spec computer labs, device testing labs and a usability lab with eye tracking devices. Students also have access to a range of recreational facilities, as well as our 24-hour library.

We provide a stimulating learning environment and access to state-of-the-art resources to help you make the most of your time with us. Flexible spaces, Wi-Fi facilities and learning zones all contribute to our lively and contemporary study environment at Solent.

The teaching team share their expertise in a range of topics including project management; software, web and mobile app development; databases; business intelligence; computer networking and security; user experience design; computer law; systems analysis and more.

Students also conduct an independent research project, addressing a research-based or practical development topic.
