Currently working in the construction industry? Eager to progress your career? Southampton Solent University’s HNC Building Surveying course gives you the chance to gain a nationally recognised construction qualification alongside day-to-day work in the industry, helping you to move towards more prestigious technician and supervisory roles.

HNC courses are highly regarded by employers because of the broad range of skills and knowledge that they teach. This industry-focused qualification will help you to develop a sound understanding of the construction process, as well as the regulatory, technological, social, legal and economic contexts that underpin it.

During the course, students will be introduced to key themes including construction surveying, building technology, science, and materials. In year two, students will focus on the legal framework and the core principles of management and Building surveying. The course is then concluded with the completion of a “live brief” based  project.

Throughout the course, students will have access to our range of industry standard facilities. These include the built environment drawing studio and a selection of dedicated surveying equipment.

This HNC provides an academic platform to enter a number of post-HNC courses, such as the BSc (Hons) Building Surveying degree at South Bank University London.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2017/18 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island part-time fees: £3,900 per year
International part-time fees: Students from outside the EU are usually unable to obtain a visa for part-time study. Please visit our visas and immigration page for more information.

Other costs

While most course costs are covered by your tuition fees, some essential resources and optional extras may need to be paid for separately. These additional costs are listed below. For advice on budgeting and managing your money, please contact student.funding@solent.ac.uk.

Compulsory costs:
An Edexcel registration fee will be payable in the first year. As a guide the 2016-17 fee was £168.60
Students are also expected to purchase sturdy work boots. These can range from £30 - £100

Optional costs:
Printing and ancillary costs: £50/£100

Bursaries and scholarships

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2017, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

Key entry requirements

16 points minimum from either 6-unit or 3-unit awards

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Please contact us for further details.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Facilities

Throughout the course, students will have the chance to access a range of high-end facilities. These include the built environment studio centre, which features industry standard drawing and design software, and a selection of levelling and surveying equipment (including total stations).

The majority of teaching is undertaken in a classroom setting, however students will be expected to work in teams outside of the classroom using specialist equipment for land surveying. 

Students develop key transferable skills including teamwork, problem solving, decision making, negotiation, numeracy and IT skills. Successful completion of the course will open up opportunities for further high level study.

Your future

There are many aspects to the work of a building surveyor. For example, they may be involved in the conservation of historic buildings or the project management of new construction works.

A typical working day could involve design relating to new and refurbished buildings and structures, internal space requirements, facilities management, building control and planning, as well as the valuation of properties.

This course helps prepare students for a varied career in the construction and property industry, and provides the opportunity to progress onto London South Bank University’s BSc (Hons) Building Surveying programme.

Placements

The majority of the part-time students studying built environment programmes at Southampton Solent are sponsored by their employers. As such, this part-time route is seen a crucial link with industry.

The programme is offered on a part-time, day-release basis to students who are already in, or are seeking, employment. It is geared towards non-standard entry and part-time delivery. It is also aligned with the most recent Educational Framework issued by the professional bodies, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and the QAA Benchmark Statements for Construction, Property and Surveying.
