Fascinated by the English language? Want to combine your love of words with the creativity of the advertising industry? Taught by cutting-edge researchers, professionals from the advertising industry and published writers, Southampton Solent University's English and advertising programme draws the best from both worlds to help you develop your professional skills and gain a deep understanding of what makes great writing.

You’ll study English literature in considerable depth and will also be introduced to advertising through a variety of units. In addition, you’ll be encouraged to think in new and imaginative ways about drama, poetry and language, and learn to relate them to film, journalism, advertising and your own creative writing.

The degree also aims to give you an understanding of how advertising campaigns are planned, developed and creatively executed, along with how advertising theory can be put into practice.

Students studying on this degree can take advantage of a combination of creatively stimulating academic study with real-world experience and a strong focus on employability. To support this students have the opportunity to work in our own in-house creative agency, Solent Creatives, which includes a publishing arm, working on live client briefs and developing links with potential employers. Students are also encouraged to seek work placements with support from the academic team, and get fully involved with practical projects set by academics and local businesses. 

To help further immerse them in the industry, previous students have also been offered the opportunities of going on literary and industry trips and visits, both in the UK and abroad.

What does this course lead to?

The communication and creative industries are fast-paced, challenging and ever-changing, and you’ll be well equipped for a career as an art director, copywriter, agency planner, junior editor, advertising historian or curator. Your ability to communicate orally, visually, digitally and in writing will make you a strong candidate.

Who is this course for?

This multi-disciplinary degree is a well-suited to students who are interested in a career in advertising, specialising specifically in the written word. Students who are interested in modern and classic literature will find plenty to keep them engaged throughout the English units.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2018/19 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* or equivalent.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
  • Alternative entry is available through our Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

A fully equipped IT centre, providing both PC and Mac computers featuring industry-standard video and audio editing programs, and software packages including Adobe Creative Suite and QuarkXpress. Training and access to photographic equipment is also available.

Students are encouraged to gain valuable work experience in our in-house creative agency, Solent Creatives, and publishing house, Solent Press.

Industry links

You will be taught by professional practitioners with strong links to the advertising industry and an impressive track record of securing work placements and employment for students. We also host a programme of guest lectures by professionals in the writing and advertising industries.

You will be taught by professional practitioners with strong links to the advertising industry through agencies such as Havas, Karmarama, WPP’s, The Store and many others. We also host guest lectures by writing and advertising professionals, including from agencies such as Work-Club, Saatchi and Saatchi, AKQA and more.

You’ll also be able to visit London agencies such as Fallon, JWT, Beattie McGuinness Bungey and wearesocial for portfolio surgeries and critiques of campaign ideas.

You’ll work on practical projects, focus on advertising campaigns, creative thinking and problem-solving, and be encouraged to work with our Solent Creatives agency and Solent Press to develop your links with employers. This will enhance your employability skills through one-off assignments and live creative briefs. We work closely with creative organisations such as D&AD, Young Creative Network (YCN) and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), and participate in the New Blood exhibition held in London every year.

For example, one of Europe’s top agencies, Havas, sent a team in to brief our students on a campaign to launch the Peugeot 208 last year.


Work experience is a key part of study at Solent, and you’ll be encouraged and supported in finding your own placement opportunities. You’ll also be able to undertake work at Solent Press or with our in-house agency, Solent Creatives.

For students wishing to gain work experience abroad, the course has previously offered a European placement pathway, aiming to enable students to adapt to living and studying in a foreign environment, with responsibility for planning and undertaking studies and achieving agreed learning outcomes.
