On Solent University’s fashion management with marketing top-up you’ll study contemporary fashion marketing, retail management and branding strategies, building a toolkit of essential skills that you will use throughout your career.

Solent University’s fashion management with marketing top-up guides students as they build on their existing knowledge and learn the specialist skills required for work in the fashion industry. The curriculum includes intensive study of fashion management, marketing, retail and brand development that concludes with a final major research project.

The course is taught with an emphasis on workplace learning and employability. Students are encouraged to work on projects at Re:So, the University’s city centre fashion and design store. Re:So is staffed, stocked and managed entirely by Solent students, giving them the opportunity to learn merchandising, fashion management and marketing while building valuable workplace experience.

Re:So also includes a learning area which hosts industry guest speakers, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions. These events emphasise fashion management, marketing, retail, enterprise and employability skills.

Relevant HND/foundation degree pass with Merit Overall (55 per cent)

  • or 240 CATS points from a relevant three-year degree.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Some units are co-delivered by industry experts. Solent University has relationships with a range of retail and fashion companies including TM Lewin, Tesco, Next, Fat Face and Rapanui. These businesses contribute to course content, ensuring the units you study remain up-to-date and relevant.

Industry experts also provide guest lectures. Recent speakers have come from BHS, Schuh, TM Lewin and Ted Baker.

On the four-year version of the course, you’ll have an opportunity to spend a year working in the fashion industry, drawing on the University’s employer network to find a placement.


The course has a keen focus on building employability skills through live projects. You’ll have the opportunity to get involved with our Re:So project, a first-of-its-kind student-run retail enterprise within the local Marlands shopping centre.

You’ll also be able to get involved in university projects such as Southampton fashion week, which is organised by final-year students. This high-profile project provides opportunities to work in many roles including market research, event organisation, fashion design, contract management and community involvement.
