About the course

Do you have a passion for live music? Are you hoping to work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry? This practical and skills- based live event technology degree will help you develop a high level of working knowledge, leaving you fully equipped to install, operate and customise audio, video and lighting systems and pursue a range of careers in the music and live events industry.

The live events industry has seen a surge of technology advances in the last 10 years, with live performances forming a backbone for the music industry. This degree supports you to develop the skills for an exciting career in the technical side of events, where there is great demand for skilled engineers and technicians.

Throughout your studies you will have the chance to build specialist skills with practical learning opportunities in our state-of-the-art facilities; from our Dolby Atmos Cinema to our HD outside broadcast vehicle. This gives you first-hand experience of the time and quality pressures associated with outside broadcasting and live events.

With the crossover between audio and visual technologies and the move to audio over IP being more prominent than ever within the live events industry, you will understand the technologies from rigging to operation utilising our close industry links throughout your programme of study.

The course has a strong focus on helping you improve your employability. As such, past students have been given regular opportunities to conduct work experience at live music and sporting events. These opportunities have included work at some of the UK’s biggest music festivals including Glastonbury and IOW festival.

Live event technology at Solent aims to encompass all areas of live events and as such students will have access to a plethora of equipment and facilities to work with in their time here.

What does this course lead to?

Students graduating from this course can secure roles as freelance sound and lighting engineers or be employed in roles within live events and outside broadcasting companies or audio/visual technicians designing and implementing systems.

Who is this course for?

The course is ideal for those looking to gain hands-on experience in the creation and installation of modern audio, video and lighting systems for events of all sizes. Technical theory and operation practice is introduced in a practical and applied manner.

Tuition fees

The 2020/21 tuition fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2019/20 fees were:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £12,875 per year

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into year two or three may be considered for this course.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Foundation Year in Media Technology.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Throughout your studies you will have the opportunity to use a range of high quality facilities including;

  • 96 seat Dolby Atmos cinema with the ability to mix and render Dolby Atmos content in Pro Tools.
  • Outside broadcast vehicle with seven ENG system cameras, up to 64-channels of audio mixing and plenty of monitoring and signal analysis.
  • State-of-the-art motion tracked multi-camera TV studio with a green infinity cove for chromakey.
  • Flagship music recording studio with Avid S6 control surface, high-quality Dynaudio monitoring and industry-standard outboard.
  • 5.1 audio dubbing theatres for recording and mixing Foley FX, ADR and music to picture content.
  • Spatial audio and VR lab, currently a 25 loudspeaker system for Ambisonic decoding and multiple Vive and Oculus headsets for VR.
  • Large hemi-anechoic chamber for test and measurement.
  • Electronics laboratory for design, test and build of hardware. Multiple power supplies, oscilloscopes and soldering stations.
  • Highly configurable broadcast laboratory/racks room for test and measurement.
  • Gaming and networking laboratories with high-performance gaming machines.
  • Access to industry-standard software for media editing, engineering simulation, coding, signal processing and analysis.
  • Multiple music, radio and TV studios for taught classes and student bookings.
  • Multiple audio and video non-linear editing suites for taught classes and student bookings.

Students can participate in student-led societies related to the degree, which include Solent Live Events Society, Sonar Cinema, Sonar Radio and Sonar TV.

This course provides the relevant skills for a wide range of roles within both the live event industry and related areas such as systems installation, lighting operation, and noise monitoring and control.

Industry links

The course team maintain very close links with alumni and as a result are well placed to arrange work experience and placement opportunities for students from level four to level six, as well as internship schemes upon graduation.

These links also enable frequent guest lectures from industry on specialist subjects, as well as industry visits to see and use specialist equipment. Students that participate in the opportunities frequently secure their first job as a result of the experience gained.

Placements

Students are offered a variety of work experience opportunities throughout their time studying at Solent. This has recently included aiding the production of content in roles such as sound assistant or noise monitoring at a variety of festivals including Glastonbury, IOW and Victorious.

Placements with companies can range from a summer to an entire year out of study. These have recently been in roles such as hardware/software engineering to production assistants for companies such as Dolby, Video Illusions, Vanguardia, NEP.
