About the course

Whether you want to promote bands, design marketing campaigns or put on your own events, Solent’s industry-focused music promotion programme is the ideal way to kick-start a career in the music industry. You’ll graduate well prepared for a range of industry roles with a portfolio of essential marketing, public relations, digital media and event management skills.

As a music promotion student you’ll develop your promotional toolkit by taking part in hands-on projects and exercises. By working on promotional campaigns, live events, case studies and entrepreneurial projects you’ll begin to internalise industry working practices and make contacts that will help you to succeed after graduation.

The University itself is proactive in bringing music to a wider audience. Music promotion students have been instrumental in managing Solent University’s annual city-wide music festival, SMILEfest. You’ll use the festival to launch and manage your group project work, working on media productions, artist marketing, public relations campaigns and live concert promotion.

Learning is supported by a varied guest speaker programme. Solent’s strong links with the music, media and entertainment industries has meant that past students have benefitted from a range of guest speakers including appearances from Andy Copping (Download Festival and Live Nation vice president); Danny Howard (Radio 1); Mike Smith (President of Music, Virgin EMI Universal); Anna Moulson (Melting Vinyl); Rob da Bank (Bestival); Marcus Russell (Oasis manager); Mark Jones (founder of Wall of Sound records); Kate Head (PR for Taylor Swift); James McMahon (Editor, Kerrang! Magazine) and Tones Sampson (Head of Press, One Little Indian records).

The course has strong industry links enabling past students to work at a variety of renowned music festivals, live venues, record companies, marketing firms, and other music businesses.

What does this course lead to?

Recent graduates have gone on to found their own artist agencies or independent labels, or to a wide range of roles in social media management, public relations, event management and artist liaison. Employers include EMI Records, Island/Universal Records, Polydor Records, VEVO, The Official Charts Company, Communion Records, Live Group, SC Productions and Murray Chalmers PR.

BA (Hons) Music Promotion is well suited to students who want to work in marketing, PR, social media, live events, recording, publishing or other areas of the music industry.

Students come from a wide range of academic or creative backgrounds, but share a passion for music and the music industry.

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* or equivalent.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


The University provides excellent learning resources and facilities to its students, from campus-wide wireless to extensive library services and dedicated student working spaces with plenty of laptop points. The course uses industry-standard Adobe Creative Suite applications such as Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver, as well as Apple Final Cut Pro.

To aid degree studies, students can also learn a diverse range of complementary skills with access to industry-standard facilities including Mac suites with the latest creative design software, as well as digital reprographics rooms.

The curriculum is built around a mix of practical insights into the music, media and events industries. Music promotion students have collaborated with other courses to organise and manage Solent’s annual live music and industry conference, SMILEfest.

We have a ten-year history of working at Glastonbury Festival as one of its major broadcast media producers, as well as an exclusive partnership with the Association of Independent Festivals and unique academic partnerships with Bestival and Camp Bestival.

Our in-house Solent Music initiative has managed over 1,500 work experience placements since its launch in 2011. It helps students to host concerts, guest speaker workshops and other student projects.


There are many work experience opportunities available throughout the course, allowing you to create an impressive portfolio and build a network of contacts.

Work experience includes our roster of summertime music festivals. Past students have worked at Bestival, Glastonbury, Camp Bestival, Blissfields, Pulse, Butserfest and SMILE festival, our very own annual music and media industries event.

Southampton is a fantastic city filled with exciting music venues, providing plenty of opportunities to build professional experience. Work experience opportunities are also available on a variety of projects throughout the year and you’ll be encouraged to seek work experience whenever you can.
