Job title:Graduate Design Manager

Employer:Kier Construction

Sahar Hosseini is an international student from Iran who completed MSc Architectural Project Management in 2022.

Tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to since leaving Solent University

I currently hold the position of Graduate Design Manager at Kier Construction. I completed my Master of Science in Architectural Project Management and graduated from Southampton Solent University in 2022.

Upon leaving the University, I transitioned to my current role in Cambridge, necessitating a move from Southampton. In my role as a design manager, I engage with the design team, consultants, and subcontractors throughout the entire project life cycle. My responsibilities include reviewing and coordinating various drawing packages, managing BREEAM submissions, and overseeing Building Control submissions.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I am currently stationed on-site, actively contributing to the Thornton Building project in Hinxton, Cambridge. This three-story office building features two distinct structures, namely concrete and CLT, and is slated to serve as a hub for the EMBL-EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) research center. Notably, our project adheres to BIM Level 2 standards, and we have successfully submitted Design Stage evidence, achieving BREEAM Excellent rating with a commendable score of 79.4%.

How do you think your studies at Solent helped prepare you for your career?

During the decision-making process for my course of study, I conducted thorough research into the roles associated with each course. I pondered the person I would become, the prospective role at the course's culmination, and whether it aligned with my interests. Delving into the specifics of the curriculum, I ensured that the course would be instrumental in shaping my career.

Reflecting on my journey, I now appreciate the course's invaluable contributions, particularly in Sustainable Building Design, Building Information Management, and Design Management.

What advice would you give to those wanting to follow in your footsteps?

For aspiring students embarking on this path, my advice is to conduct extensive research into the construction industry, stay abreast of new technologies, explore global projects, and generate innovative ideas for businesses. Fearlessly seek guidance from knowledgeable professionals within the university setting.
