In the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS), courses in the Department of Art and Music at Southampton Solent University have received top scores from undergrads, placing them in the top 25% nationally and, in some subjects, ranking best in the country.
A national survey which receives insights from more than a quarter of a million students studying at UK universities, NSS showcases the impact institutions like Solent have on its learning community.
The latest results, which collates feedback from final-year students, indicates that undergrads pursuing creative subjects like performing arts and fashion management are very satisfied with Solent’s practice-led approach to teaching and learning.
Most impressively, Solent’s courses grouped under performing arts have been ranked first – meaning best in the UK out of nine institutions which offer the same subjects – in a variety of areas including academic support, teaching, and learning opportunities. When it comes to drama subjects, Solent is leading the way, ranking first in the country out of 64 institutions for academic support and teaching.
Head of Art and Music at Solent, Brent Meheux, says:
“At Solent, we value the insights of our student community and are proud to see that our approach to learning and teaching is having the highly positive impact we aim for. Students come to Solent with a passion for their subject, and it’s our job to give them the tools they need to thrive in that area.
“This year’s National Student Survey results show that our students in the creative arts are indeed thriving at Solent, and that is with thanks to the inimitable commitment of our academics.”
Solent students pursuing subjects in the creative industries – whether it’s fashion, acting or anything in between – have many opportunities to gain meaningful experiences in the field. Most recently, more than 80 students took part in Home Theatre Southampton – a bespoke performing arts initiative led by Kerry Kyriacos Michael MBE.
