Solent academic to share Agatha Christie expertise on historic route

17 February 2026

Dr Mark Aldridge, Associate Professor of Screen Histories at Southampton Solent University, has been invited to share his world-leading research aboard the iconic Golden Eagle Danube Express.

The exclusive five-day journey will follow the original route of the legendary Orient Express, retracing the path from Paris to Istanbul that was famously travelled by Agatha Christie. Departing at the end of May, the train will call at Champagne, Vienna, Postojna, Belgrade and Sofia before reaching its final destination in Istanbul.

Mark was selected for this opportunity in recognition of his internationally respected expertise on Christie and his extensive experience bringing academic research to wider audiences. During the journey, he will deliver talks and engage with passengers from around the world, offering insights into Christie’s life, legacy and enduring cultural impact.

Speaking about the opportunity, Dr Aldridge said:

“It’s a tremendous honour to be invited aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express to discuss the life and work of Agatha Christie while travelling the very route that inspired her.

“The Orient Express has such a powerful place in literary and cultural history, and to share that story with an international audience, in such an evocative setting, is incredibly special. I’m very much looking forward to bringing Christie’s world to life for passengers as we retrace this remarkable journey.”

Mark is no stranger to championing the celebrated crime writer. He has contributed to a range of high-profile projects, including a course for BBC Maestro which used cutting-edge technology to bring Christie’s voice and writing craft to life for a global audience.

Alongside his research, Mark teaches on Solent’s Film & Television course, where students benefit from hands-on, practice-led opportunities. The programme includes access to the university’s in-house production agencies and three high-quality studios, helping to prepare graduates for careers across the creative industries.
