A Southampton Solent University Fine Art graduate is delving into themes of memory, identity and self-discovery through an immersive new exhibition.
Artist Jackie Eksi's exhibition, Lies and Truth, brings together a series of sculptural elements that can be assembled in multiple configurations, creating a shifting labyrinth, inspired by the 1986 film of the same name.
Having graduated from Solent's BA (Hons) Fine Art course in 2015, Jackie credits the University with helping her develop the confidence, skills and connections that continue to shape her work today.
"I was born and bred in Southampton," says Jackie. "When I visited Solent, they wanted to know what was behind my work and what it meant to me. I felt supported from the start and knew it was somewhere I could really be myself."
Before university, Jackie had begun exploring art through evening classes and further education. Having visited several universities, she ultimately chose Solent after seeing the support her dyslexic daughter received while studying Illustration at the University.
"I already felt like I was coming somewhere familiar that was going to be supportive," she says. As a mature student with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and other health challenges, she credits the University's supportive culture with helping her overcome barriers and discover her artistic voice.
"They challenged me in ways I didn't expect," she says. "I suffer with anxiety and would often rather stay in the background, but the lecturers encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. They pushed me to present my work, perform publicly and believe in myself."
Through practice-led learning, exhibitions and creative projects, Jackie developed both artistic and professional skills that continue to shape her career today.
Following university, she became involved in a range of Southampton-based cultural projects through connections made during her studies, collaborating with local artists, historians and community organisations.
Her work has explored the city's heritage, communities and personal histories, often bringing together performance, installation and storytelling.
"One of the biggest things Solent gave me was connections," Jackie explains. "The people I met there led to projects and opportunities that I'm still involved with years later."
Jackie's latest exhibition, supported by the Outside In bursary, will be showcased at God's House Tower in Southampton from 18 - 22 June and marks another significant milestone in her artistic journey.
The opportunity has enabled her to bring an ambitious project to life while receiving practical support navigating the complexities of exhibiting as a disabled artist.
"It means a lot," she says. "The support has been incredible. The art world can be difficult to navigate and having people who believe in you and help you through the process makes all the difference."
Jackie’s story reflects Southampton Solent University's commitment to creating opportunities for all learners. Through its Career Ready Revolution and Strategy 2035, the University is redesigning higher education around real-world experience, lifelong learning and strong regional partnerships, ensuring students graduate with the skills, confidence and connections needed to succeed.
As she prepares to welcome visitors to Lies and Truth, Jackie reflects on the support that has helped shape her creative journey.
"Having the right people behind you is really important," she says. "Solent gave me the confidence to keep going, to keep creating and to keep finding new opportunities."
