Global experience for students at world's largest youth football tournament

24 July 2026

A group of 47 students and alumni from Southampton Solent University recently travelled to Sweden to provide professional support at the Gothia Cup, the world's largest international youth football tournament.

The group, made up of students from the University's Sport and Exercise Therapy and Football Studies courses, spent a week in Gothenburg supporting young athletes competing in the prestigious competition.

Held annually, the Gothia Cup brings together young footballers from around the world. This year's tournament attracted more than 1,900 teams from 79 nations, creating a truly international environment and offering Solent's students a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a fast-paced sporting setting.

Throughout the tournament, Sport and Exercise Therapy students and alumni provided pitch side and clinical support to teams from the UK, responding to injuries and helping players perform at their best. Working in real-time alongside athletes and coaches enabled them to gain invaluable experience in assessment, treatment and rehabilitation within a live competition environment.

Meanwhile, students from Solent's Football Studies course put their coaching knowledge into practice, supporting teams throughout the event and developing their skills in player development, performance analysis and matchday management.

The experience allowed students to work under pressure, build professional confidence and gain first-hand insight into the demands of elite youth sport, while representing Southampton Solent University on an international stage.

Dr Lynsey Northeast, Course Lead for Sport and Exercise Therapy at Southampton Solent University, said:

"Experiences like the Gothia Cup are invaluable for our students because they give them the opportunity to apply their learning in a real world, high performance environment. Working with athletes from across the globe, responding to injuries pitch-side and supporting teams throughout an international tournament enables them to develop the confidence, professionalism and practical skills that employers are looking for. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented Solent and embraced this opportunity."

Southampton Solent University's BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy course is designed to equip students with the practical and clinical skills needed to assess, treat and rehabilitate injuries across a range of sporting and healthcare environments. Through industry partnerships, placement opportunities and hands on learning experiences, students graduate ready to support athletes at all levels of sport.

The University's Football Studies programme combines academic study with practical coaching and performance experience, helping students develop the skills and knowledge needed for careers across the football industry. Students benefit from access to professional facilities, industry networks and opportunities to gain experience in real world sporting environments both in the UK and internationally.

The Gothia Cup experience forms part of Southampton Solent University's commitment to providing students with industry-facing opportunities that enhance employability, professional development and practical learning beyond the classroom.
