Graduate inspires next generation of young broadcasters

Cameron Jarvis recently completed his BA (Hons) Sports Journalism with a 2:1, graduating with a clear sense of where his career is headed.

"The dream is sports broadcaster, a commentator, a TV presenter,” he says.

It is a goal Cameron has been actively building towards, and this summer that has taken him further than most. Now based at a camp in upstate New York, he is teaching young people the art of podcasting, drawing directly on skills he developed during his degree.

"One of our modules was podcasting," he explains. "Putting together interviews, finding audio clips, building a story and they asked if anyone could teach podcasting and inspire the next generation. I said yes."

Cameron first travelled to the camp at eighteen, after finishing his A-levels and has returned every summer since, but this year his studies gave him something new to bring with him.

Teaching the craft he had only recently learned himself felt like a natural extension of everything Solent had prepared him for. "You've learned all these skills, you've got the work experience, you've learned to network," he says. "You feel ready, no matter what."

University had not originally been his plan but after visiting the University he knew it was the right fit. "I got into the newsroom, and I just thought, yeah, I like this place," he says. "The lecturers were always engaged and there was a passion there."

Through his course, Cameron developed skills in editing, audio production, commentary and digital content, picking up techniques from lecturers that shapes how he works today.

His work experience during the degree has put his newsroom skills into practice. A lecturer reached out about a media opportunity with Clubber TV, covering non-league football were Cameron utilised his commentary training.

After graduating, Cameron plans to continue his volunteer role with Bromsgrove Sporting's media team while job hunting, with an eye on sports broadcasting, commentary and presenting.
