Solent Graphic Design Students nominated in National Design Awards

29 June 2026

Seven final-year students from Southampton Solent University's BA (Hons) Graphic Design course have been shortlisted for a prestigious national design award.

The Starpack Student Awards are one of the most respected competitions in the packaging and design industry, challenging students to design innovative solutions to briefs set by brand-leading FMCG companies, design agencies and manufacturers.

This year's shortlisted students tackled categories ranging from e-commerce packaging for drinks to packaging with purpose beyond the product.

The seven shortlisted students are Shivani Kumar, Tilly Elder, Sophie Atkins, Ash Raine, Flynn Budd, Carmen Yau and Ellie Pennington.

Their submissions were assessed against a rigorous set of criteria including recyclability, recycled content, environmental impact in manufacturing, carbon and water footprint, responsible sourcing, labelling, customer appeal, and suitability for returns.

Chris Venables, Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication at Solent, said: "The graphics team is committed to identifying platforms that allow students to showcase their work to future employers. The Starpack Student Awards are an excellent opportunity for students to present their innovative ideas and solutions to an industry that is looking for rising stars.

"We are incredibly proud of the shortlisted students. They have worked so hard on their submissions, which not only included surface design, but also materials and the manufacturing process."

Their nominations reflect Solent's wider commitment to designing degrees around real-world outcomes. By working to live industry briefs, students build the kind of portfolio-ready, professionally relevant experience that employers are increasingly seeking.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 2nd July.
