Dylan showcases his innovative radio telescope to industry professionals visiting the engineering poster day

Student turns recycled household tech into working radio telescope

A recent graduate from Southampton Solent University demonstrated how radio astronomy can be made more accessible through an innovative Final Major Project, built using repurposed household technology.

Dylan Packham, 20, recently graduated with a First Class honours from Solent University's BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering Degree Apprenticeship while working at Airbus as a Payload Systems Engineer, specialising in RF and satellite communications.

For his Final Major Project, Dylan designed and built a functioning radio telescope using a recycled satellite TV dish, software-defined radio technology and a custom-built motorised mount. The project explores how the principles of radio astronomy can be demonstrated using affordable, widely available components.

Inspired by his passion for space and engineering, Dylan wanted to challenge the perception that radio telescopes are only accessible to large research organisations.

"Traditional radio telescopes are incredibly expensive, but they use the same basic parabolic dish principle as domestic satellite systems," says Dylan. "With so many unused satellite TV dishes available, I wanted to see if it was possible to build a practical, low-cost radio telescope that could be used for education and experimentation."

The completed system combines mechanical, electronic and radio frequency engineering, allowing the dish to track targets and receive radio signals for analysis. By repurposing existing hardware, the project also highlights the role sustainable engineering can play in reducing waste and extending the life of everyday technology.

Dylan's interest in engineering comes from a lifelong passion for maths, science and space. His degree apprenticeship with Airbus has given him the opportunity to combine academic study with industry experience, developing specialist knowledge in telecommunications satellites and RF systems.

Reflecting on his time at Solent, Dylan says: "The people have been the best part of the experience. The apprentices I studied alongside are incredibly hardworking and inspiring, and the lecturers have been hugely supportive. They're experts in their fields and genuinely invested in helping students succeed."

With ambitions to continue his studies in antennas or wireless communications, Dylan hopes to pursue a career in the space sector, building on the skills and experience developed during his time at Solent University. He will also soon be joining a new company as a direct entry Systems Engineer, working on Sensors and Communications, taking the next step in his engineering career.
