Oscar-winning and BAFTA-nominated Editor of Gravity, Mark Sanger has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Arts by Solent University today (Monday 9 July).

During his 25-year film career, Mark has worked with many of the industry greats, including Tim Burton on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd; Stephen Sommers on The Mummy franchise; three James Bond films; and numerous independent films for directors as eclectic as Atom Egoyan, Gabor Csupo and Neil LaBute.

He most recently edited Transformers: The Last Knight for Paramount Pictures and is currently editing Detective Pikachu for Universal.

Mark is a Visiting Fellow of Solent and is a regular visitor to the University. He most recently joined the students for Solent Post Day – a one-day conference with top editors and sound designers from film and television, in which students gained a vast amount of knowledge and industry know-how from their sessions with him. "The moment you speak to the students at Solent you get a sense of their passion and enthusiasm – it’s like a shot of adrenaline and I always go back into work the next day with a big smile on my face," said Mark.

Mark added: "The advice I give to students is to always make yourself invaluable to those around you, but never at the expense of others. That way you will thrive, people will want to work with you and you’ll be able to learn so much from them."
