Solent signs pledge to never invest in fossil fuels or companies which do invest in them.

8th April 2020

Solent University has confirmed its fossil-free status by signing a pledge to never invest in fossil fuels, or companies which do invest in them, in a declaration developed by People & Planet and the NUS.

The University adds its voice to a growing movement of more than a quarter of UK higher education institutions committed to divesting from fossil fuel corporations.

On signing the Fossil Fuel Declaration, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen Stanton said: “Universities need to lead the way in showing how we can all take responsibility for our actions in safeguarding the planet.

“We have students from around the world, some from communities who are already feeling the effects of, and are on the front lines of, climate change.

“We must embrace our role as educators and researchers and play our part in protecting the future for all.”

In December 2015, 195 countries committed to a legally binding international commitment to keep global warming between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius – the first deal of its kind.
