Solent Sport manages and delivers various PE programmes and sporting competitions for young people in Southampton, aged 5 to 16 years, ensuring they have the best opportunities to play, compete and succeed in physical education as well as school and community sport.

About the programmes

Since 2004, Solent Sport's PE programmes have brought together primary, secondary and special schools in Southampton, as well as local authorities, national governing bodies of sport (NGBs), sports associations, community clubs, and leisure providers, coaches and volunteers.

With the Government's PE Premium Funding, Solent Sport has been able to continue to grow and develop its offer to schools. Teams of specialist teachers, coaches and external partners have developed programmes that have enhanced the quality of PE delivered within local schools with new dynamic and flexible initiatives that can be adapted to suit schools' needs.

Programmes also offer support to school staff members by:

  • training teachers to improve the quality of PE lessons through one-to-one support, Continuous Personal Development (CPD) and PE Improvement Plan, and
  • assisting schools in evaluating their current PE provisions and measuring the impact of the PE Premium Funding on their sporting activities.

School sport activities

Solent Sport also looks after the School Games, a programme of exciting intra-school competitions in the city. The School Games project offers Southampton Solent University students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by supporting and running key elements of the programmes.
