The Solent School Sport Partnership was created in 2004 as part of the original School Sport Partnership government initiative. The team continues to explore innovative ways to support schools and help them meet the needs of their pupils with almost 150 programmes being delivered across an academic year to schools within Southampton.

At least 20 student led academic projects/clubs are being delivered in our local schools and community in partnership with support from the Solent School Sport Partnership team. We engage with over 80 per cent of the schools in Southampton and are now taking our provision into neighbouring boroughs. Our programmes focus on key areas such as staff training and support, enrichment opportunities, teaching and learning, assessment and planning, inclusion, engagement and school culture, and health and wellbeing.

We have successfully placed 80 students from the BA (Hons) Physical Education degree into school environments as part of their study, as well as a further 60 looking to gain experience within a school environment. This experience is not only beneficial to our students, but also the local schools, as they gain a valuable team member to support PE delivery, and the children progress and learn new skills.

Why you should partner with us

Evidence shows that education and health are closely linked, and that pupils with better health and wellbeing are likely to achieve more academically. This emphasis can be seen in Ofsted which will be evaluating the new healthy rating scheme for schools, incorporating a thematic review on obesity, healthy eating and physical activity.

With the doubling of the PE Sports Premium, schools are accountable for ensuring there is more emphasis on health and wellbeing for all pupils. Our programmes are designed to support you to engage young people in PE and school sport while promoting health and wellbeing.

This is further enhanced by inspiring them to develop an active and healthy lifestyle, giving them the tools to be successful in life. Our programmes support schools to make sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and school sport to benefit current pupils and also those who join the school in future years.

What we offer

We offer a range of programmes focusing on five key areas.

  • Staff training and support
  • Enrichment opportunities
  • Teaching and learning, assessment and planning
  • Inclusion engagement and school culture
  • Health and wellbeing

Our vision is to have all Southampton schools using this product as a way of capturing and evidencing pupil participation.

During the 2017/18 academic year, the Solent's School Games organisers worked with 16 national governing bodies, delivered 33 league competitions, 49 cup competitions, 11 festivals and 4 inclusive events, worked with 39 of the 46 primary schools in the City and all 14 of the secondary schools and engaging with 9,572 young people. Six of these competitions were specifically for young people with a disability - approximately 150 engaged in these events.

The SGOs delivered a leadership academy to 36 young people at Bitterne Park Secondary School and then utilised them to deliver a competition alongside our staff and students.

This variety of engagement, along with the student led projects, brings together schools, national governing bodies (NGBs), sports associations, community clubs, and leisure providers, as well as a skilled range of local coaches and volunteers (student and external) providing the community with high quality opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity.
