Why did you choose Solent?

After completing my A-levels in Gibraltar, I wanted to go straight to university to study a maritime degree. I researched the top maritime courses in the UK and Solent University popped up. I flew to Southampton for one of the University’s open days. It gave me the chance to see the city that reminded me so much about home. I loved the town. Everyone was so friendly, and everything was so close by.

What was the best thing about your course lecturers?

Lecturers are highly knowledgeable and have many years of experience in the maritime sector. They are all very approachable and always encourage students to really push themselves to make the most out of the course. They also have loads of industry connections across the globe, whether it be alumni or previous colleagues, which they call upon every year to attend the annual maritime conference on campus.

Do you feel your studies have helped you prepare for a career in the industry?

My studies have definitely helped me prepare for a career in the maritime industry. Over the three years of the course, the curriculum covered all the relevant and topical developments within the industry, so when I graduated, I had a full understanding of the recent progress and challenges within the sector. I thoroughly enjoyed the topic of alternative and green fuels. It was such an interesting subject for me that I decided to write about it in my dissertation.

During my studies, I’ve also learnt about the different platforms and software that are used in the maritime sector. And above all, one of the most important things I’ve learnt is time management, which is one of the most important things. The maritime industry never sleeps, so you need to be prepared to work within time constraints and manage your tasks in a timely manner.

Being a Solent student is great, you get to make so many new friends from different walks of life and by the time you reach graduation, you have made friends for life.

What do you think you’ve taken away from your time at Solent University?

All the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained from my course. The course has allowed me to have an in-depth knowledge of the maritime industry. I’ve also developed amazing friendships.

What’s next for you?

My long-term career objective is to become the Captain of the Port for the Gibraltar Port Authority. Solent has given me the foundations to aim for this goal.

Do you have any tips for students who might want to get into the industry?

Never give up on your goals and dreams. The sky is the limit with this industry. By undertaking this course, it opens many doors within the maritime field. You are given all the resources and advice to succeed, so use them to your fullest because whatever you put into your learning is what you will get out of it. Give it 110% throughout the duration of the course and I can assure you, you’ll eventually reap the rewards of your labour.
