Brent is head of visual communication and applied arts, and is the course leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design. He is also an external examiner at Newcastle College. He has almost 20 years of experience in education, and has taught on a wide range of courses in the area of visual communication over this period.

Brent has a great deal of experience writing and validating courses, from undergraduate and postgraduate, to new and innovative distance learning options. Whilst industry-focussed in his research, he is also internationally minded, undertaking a great many research trips, both with students and with colleagues, to seek out best practice in pedagogy. 

He is currently studying for his PhD, and is at present looking at the role of the creative in the process of creating memorials to conflict, in particular the role of creative's who have first hand knowledge of such conflicts.

Brent still maintains his professional practice which covers a wide range of visual mediums, from photography, through illustration and graphic design to sculpture. His work is shared widely online, and he has shown nationally and internationally.

Brent's varied teaching experience coupled with his industry experience, provides him with a well-balanced perspective on higher education and a unique skill set.

During his 25 year industry career, Brent has worked for such prestigious employers as The Times and The Sunday Times newspapers, as well as founding an award-winning full service creative agency in the South West.

  1. Industry experience

    Brent has experience in online design agencies, marketing and promotion of over 30 independent blogs. Follow the link for more information.

    2007 to 2013: online design agency, the design, marketing and promotion of over 30 independent blogs, online magazines and websites designed to market and promote third party client services and products.

    2000 to 2007: Cre8media, creative director, a full service advertising marketing agency, with a turnover in excess of 500K a year. With responsibility for 15 staff spread over studio, marketing and new business development. Services provided included marketing, graphic design for print, public sector newspapers and national magazines, web design, ecommerce, and database driven web solutions, as well as outdoor advertising, radio and TV commercials.

    1986 to 2000: The Times The Sunday Times newspapers as a senior graphic designer.

    2015 to date: course leader at Solent University on BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design.

    September 2015: course leader at Solent University on MA Visual Communication.

    February 2015: Link tutor for the franchised course, BA Graphic Design, being delivered at Limkokwing University in Malaysia from February 2015.

    2013 to date: Lecturer and unit leader at Solent University on BA Graphic Design.

    April 2013: Graphic Design Avans Hogeschool, Breada, Holland. Lecturing as part of an Erasmus cooperation program.

    1999 to 2013: Associate lecturer at Solent University on BA Graphic Design and a wide range of courses within fashion.

  3. Research interests

    As part of his MA studies, and in conjunction with his PGCLT(HE) studies, Brent is looking at the role and impact of visual communication within the education of undergraduate students, and in particular blended learning within a digital environment.
