Daniel Pennie is a musician, visual artist, award-winning film composer, session guitarist, producer, label owner and published academic currently undertaking a PhD. His interdisciplinary practice brings together visual art, experimental music, composition, improvisation, performance and film scores.
A founding member of the cross-platform groups Noise In Your Eye and MADband, Pennie has exhibited artwork and composed and performed alongside internationally acclaimed musicians and artists. His Fine Art background informs an experimental approach to music-making, in which the electric guitar is frequently treated as a noise generator and used to construct evolving soundscapes through loops, layers, treatments and prepared-guitar techniques.
His creative and research practice explores the relationships between sound, image, texture, physicality and performance, often challenging conventional approaches to musical instruments and composition.
Pennie has taught extensively across Music, Art and Film programmes, developing original course content and interdisciplinary approaches to creative education. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music in the School of Art and Music at Solent University and has also served as External Examiner for Contemporary Art Practice at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen.
He holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of the West of England, an MA/PG Dip in Contemporary Music and Culture from Bath Spa University, and a PGCE from the University of Reading. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
