Biography

Greg is a senior lecturer of music. He has been teaching at Solent University since 2016, with teaching specialisms including the bass guitar, music theory composition and performance. He is also the Professor of Bass Guitar and Jazz at the Royal Marines School of Music and Royal Military School of Music (Portsmouth), teaching undergraduate and postgraduate musicians.

Alongside teaching, Greg is also a professional bass player. He has played the double bass for nearly 35 years, starting at age nine under the supervision of renowned bassist, Barry Glynn. In his early teens Greg also started playing the electric bass guitar, subsequently studying a Higher Diploma in music performance. He completed a bachelor’s degree at the Open University, with a dissertation centred on the history of music performance. He later went on to study music at postgraduate level at the University of Southampton where he was awarded a master's degree in Musicology. His final dissertation examined the development of hardcore punk in the USA during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Greg has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PgCLTHE) and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His current research focuses on composing for the bass guitar in a range of settings, and he is enrolled as a doctoral student, here at Solent University.

Greg has performed with many different bands and ensembles in a wide variety of venues and settings, from aircraft carriers, festivals, and concert halls, through to corporate functions and a vast number of weddings. He has also recorded in numerous music studios including Winterland Studios in Minneapolis. Greg performs with an array of different bands and undertakes regular dep, recording and session work.
