Biography

John is a senior lecturer in architectural technology at Southampton Solent University, bringing more than 35 years' experience across construction and architectural experience to his teaching.

Beginning his career as a shopfitter and joiner, John developed a deep understanding of how buildings are assembled before progressing into architectural practices, where he spent more than 25 years and advanced to associate level.

Specialising in architectural design, technical detailing and project delivery, John combines extensive professional expertise with practical construction knowledge, enabling students to understand not only how buildings are designed, but how they are successfully realised.

John teaches across the University's architecture courses, from HNC through to MSc and MArch. He leads teaching in architectural design, technical detailing, construction, site investigations, and contract administration, and is a strong advocate for technical excellence throughout the architecture curriculum. He champions the integration of creative design with robust technical resolution, encouraging students to produce work that is innovative, buildable and professionally rigorous. His teaching places particular emphasis on precision, quality of technical communication, and developing the professional judgment required for contemporary architectural practice.

John's research interests centre on emerging construction methods, innovative building technologies, and sustainable approaches to design and construction. By bringing current industry developments into the classroom, he ensures students engage with the latest thinking while developing the technical skills needed to respond to the challenges of a rapidly evolving built environment.

John holds a BA (Hons) in architectural design and technology from Southampton Solent University, completed part‑time while working in professional practice, together with a master’s in architectural professional practice. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (MCIAT).

Before joining Solent University as a full‑time academic, John worked in several Hampshire architectural practices as an architectural technologist. His portfolio includes projects ranging from bespoke residential developments to multi‑million‑pounds healthcare, leisure and commercial buildings, taking schemes from concept through to completion. As both technical lead and contract administrator, he developed extensive expertise in coordinating design teams, resolving complex technical challenges and delivering high-quality built outcomes. He now draws on this breadth of experience to inspire the next generation of architectural technologists, fostering graduates who combine creative ambition with technical excellence and a strong understanding of professional practice.
