Louise Morrell, Senior Lecturer

Biography

Louise studied art and design at Pembrokeshire College for two years which took her on to studying a foundation in art and design at Carmarthen College of Technology and Art (CCTA) for a year, and then on to an HND in computer graphics for two years. Adobe was at its infant stage and was only available on the Mac operating system - Louise had the 'pleasure' of using Adobe Photoshop without layers, which was highly frustrating and time consuming. After graduating from CCTA, Louise worked as a graphic designer for a small design and reprographics company where she learnt the traditional side of reprographics and print.

After travelling around Australia on a working visa for a year, Louise moved to London where she worked for an agency as a graphic designer and a photography stylist. Here, she also began to develop her web development skills in Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Louise worked as a graphic designer for over 10 years before deciding on a career change. She came to Solent University to study a BSc (Hons) degree in software engineering. She continued her interest in web development and taught herself to write HTML and CSS which she then took on as freelance work to develop websites. She was also part of a small filming team involved in creating and editing many music videos, a short film and taking behind the scenes and promotional photography for the bands. You can see her videos on vimeo.

While studying for her software engineering degree, Louise began working as a programmer and designer for Solent's eDC team (now known as Learning Technologies or LTU), where she was able to enhance her knowledge in programming and involve herself in creating and designing websites, plus other graphic design web elements and interactive graphics. She worked with the team to develop the University's Portal and myCourse (now know as SOL).

Louise began teaching in October 2009 as a part-time associate lecturer and in January 2013 she was employed as a full-time lecturer in digital and interactive media. In 2014 she became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) which took her position to a senior lecturer.

While still working full-time, Louise studied a master's degree in interactive media practice for two years part-time, between 2016-2018. This involved design and development of mobile apps for iOS and Android using AR, UX design, IOT, wearables; interactive design, prototyping using Adobe XD and inVision; e-commerce; e-marketing and social media marketing.

Her next ambition is to study for a PhD and she is currently searching for a good topic.
