Headshot of Tom Doncom

Biography

After completing his undergraduate degree in Football Studies with Solent University in 2019, Tom has re-joined the university as a lecturer in sport and exercise psychology just four years on.

His passion for sport and exercise psychology was ignited as part of the applied sport psychology module on the football studies degree and inspired Tom to pursue an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology with Staffordshire University in 2020.

Tom began his PhD in 2021 with the University of Stirling in Attribution Retraining and Social Support in sport. Using co-production, Tom has developed an Attribution Retraining in Sport (ARiS) intervention that can be used to create healthier reflections for athletes, coaches, and support staff in sport.

Tom also has an interest in social psychology in sport, in particular social identity theory, which forms the foundations of a multi-university research project he is leading on over the next academic year.

Aside from his research interests, Tom also has a passion for supporting student athletes in their performance. Working with our talented athletes, Tom is able to embed his novel research into applied practice as he works towards HCPC Sport and Exercise Psychologist accreditation status.

Further information

Tom has a variety of coaching and psychological support experience, ranging from grassroots to elite athletes. The majority of Tom’s experience comes through his consultancy work, TDPsychology, that looks to embed psychology within 1:2:1 coaching across a number of sports, such as football, golf, and cricket.

Tom also engages with our sport excellence programme within the University, offering workshops and 1-2-1 support around psychological concepts that influence performance.
