Andy Chan

Role at Solent

Andy is leading all matters relating to research, knowledge exchange and business engagement at Southampton Solent University, while ensuring these activities align with University missions and regional economic strategies.

Academically Andy’s research is on atmospheric modelling, focusing on the complex relationships between air pollution and climatology near coastal regions.

Experience

Professor Andy Chan was previously the Executive Dean of Engineering of Robert Gordon University and the Vice Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) of the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Andy’s area of expertise is on air pollution and computational fluid dynamics, especially towards monsoon climates. During the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) episode, he was one of the team leader appointed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to discover the dispersion of mechanisms of the SARS virus in the dense cityscapes in Hong Kong. He is currently the leader of the multi-national 7SEAS-NASA project (Seven South-east Asian Studies, National Aeronautics and Space Administration), which studies the propagation of haze in Southeast Asia. He is currently also serving as the government expert consultant on development of urban planning guidelines against air pollution and extreme weather conditions.

Andy obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) from the University of Hong Kong in 1997 and 1993 respectively. He is currently the Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES), a Principal Fellow of Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) and a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He has published more than 150 refereed journal publications and obtained more than GBP £5 million of research grant under his name.

Aside from his specialisation in air pollution, Andy is a world-known expert on recycled carbon fibres and its applications. He has studied recycled carbon fibres, its properties and applications for more than 15 years. He has successfully commercialised various products like heated garments, energy harvesters and delivery systems derived from carbon fibres and have attracted lots of interest from the industries and the media. He holds position in companies in these areas of expertise and has 16 international patents.
