Solent University has a long history of collaborating with both regional and national businesses on research, consultancy projects and creative briefs.

Research and consultancy for business at the University is managed by four distinct research and innovation hubs, covering areas including business and society; the creative industries; maritime, technology and the environment; and sports, health and wellbeing. Each research hub strives to provide industry leading research with measurable real world impact.

Our research specialisms are split into four individual areas:

Business and society research

The hub provides external partners with access to expertise in business, law, psychology and social enterprise. It is an environment which is open to exploration and enquiry in partnership with industry, all levels of government, non-governmental organisations, social enterprises and other third sector bodies.

Via consultancy, knowledge exchange initiatives, co-funded projects, studentships, commissioned research, and other forms of partnership working, the hub offers external partners specialised input in developing innovative solutions to meet their needs.

Our strong commitment to social justice is echoed in the work of this research hub across the areas of equality and diversity, enterprise and community, law, and psychology.

A key priority of the business and society research hub is to engage students in an innovative, imaginative and flexible employer-led curriculum underpinned by applied research.

Specific tasks and actions focus on product innovation. The business development centre is an important connection between the hub and the business world and enables academic staff and students to engage with employers. It is the channel through which the hub develops and delivers much of its commercial, income-generating and business-partnership work.

Creative and digital industries research

Solent University is the largest UK centre for undergraduate work in the creative and digital Industries outside of London. As such, our creative and digital industries hub covers a broad range of creative disciplines including media, art, design and fashion.

The hub’s strengths within the creative and digital industries form a strong basis for external partners to work with Solent’s researchers in developing innovative new approaches and exploring creative possibilities which will be of benefit to their field.

External bodies can interact with researchers within the hub in a number of ways to arrive at creative responses to their identified goals. Sponsored studentships, commissioned research projects and community based partnership initiatives are just some examples.

The academic staff within this hub maintain close working relationships with partners in their respective areas.

The hub also encourages students to gain valuable work experience, enabling them to work on real projects with various live businesses. Solent Creatives is a University venture created to provide administrative support for these skills-matched projects. Solent Productions, the University's media production centre, is also working with talented students and cutting edge media technology to provide professional broadcast and media services to British businesses.

Maritime, technology and environment research

The theme of sustainability runs through this hub to benefit a wide range of industry sectors. Our research groups are making important contributions in acoustics and audio technology, the built environment, computing, maritime resource management and maritime environmental management

These strengths also mean that the hub offers scope to partners within industry and beyond to commission research which responds to immediate industry concerns and needs. The close connections between the hub and industry means that partners who undertake consultancy, co-sponsored research projects, studentships or knowledge transfer partnerships with Solent benefit from up-to-the-minute research in a number of fast moving fields.

The maritime and technology research hub offers some unique and exciting opportunities in a diverse range of subject areas, each of which have a very real place in the world of work.

Sport, health and wellbeing

Building on the University’s position as a leading provider of football-related research, this hub has forged exciting partnerships with a variety of agencies including the League Managers Association, the Football Association and various professional football clubs. Away from football, the sport, health and wellbeing hub also has connections with NHS organisations, GB diving and GB wheelchair rugby.

Sport, health and wellbeing are integral to the wider community, and the hub provides a quality research service to its industry partners while also supporting the needs of the local community.

The hub's product and service range is carefully designed to maximise sporting opportunities and to underpin the student experience in Southampton. It offers competitive and recreational sport, coach education courses and volunteering opportunities, as well as talented athlete support through our high performance academy.
