Accommodation advice for apprentices

Think before you move

Before beginning your search for accommodation, it’s worth considering whether moving is actually necessary for your apprenticeship. For example, if your workplace is outside Southampton and you’ll only be attending your course in Southampton one day a week, it may be more practical - and cost-effective - to commute for that one day and remain in your current accommodation. Staying closer to your place of work can reduce travel time, save money, and help you maintain a better work-life balance. Only consider relocating if your work or study schedule makes commuting impractical.

Understanding your options

As outlined by UCAS, apprentices have a few different accommodation routes to consider. Some employers may offer support, such as relocation packages, company-owned housing, or guidance on where to live. It’s a good idea to ask about this during your interview or induction. If no support is provided, you’ll need to explore private rentals, lodgings (renting a room in someone’s home), etc.

When renting privately, you’ll need to consider whether you want to live alone or share with others. Lodging can be a more affordable option and may include bills or meals, but it’s important to understand the terms before committing.

Council Tax and legal responsibilities

Because apprentices are not usually classed as full-time students, you are likely to be liable for Council Tax. This is a significant difference from university students, who are typically exempt. Make sure to check with your local council and include this cost in your financial planning.

Before signing any tenancy agreement, it’s crucial to speak directly with the landlord or letting agent. Ask questions about what’s included in the rent, whether the property is furnished, and how your deposit will be protected. Never sign a contract or send money without viewing the property in person or through a verified virtual tour.

Finding accommodation in Southampton

If you're based in Southampton, the SASSH (Southampton Accreditation Scheme for Student Housing) website is a trusted place to start your search. SASSH is supported by Southampton Solent University, the University of Southampton, and the local council. It lists accredited properties that meet agreed safety and quality standards.

Through SASSH, you can search for rooms and houses, compare prices, and contact landlords directly. The platform also offers advice on tenancy rights and responsibilities, and it’s available year-round - not just during term time.

Additionally, SASSH has a specific message board for apprentices to find housemates. This can be a great way to connect with other apprentices and share accommodation.

Looking beyond student accommodation

As an apprentice, you may find that student-specific housing isn’t always available or suitable for your needs. In this case, you’ll need to explore the open rental market. There are several helpful places to look for non-student accommodation in Southampton:

  • Southampton City Council’s website offers housing advice and links to local services.
  • The Southampton Daily Echo newspaper has a property section, both online and in print.
  • National property websites like Rightmove and Zoopla list a wide range of rental options.
  • If you explore social media groups, always verify listings carefully.

When using these platforms, make sure to filter for your budget, preferred location, and contract length. Always contact landlords or agents directly to ask questions and arrange viewings before signing anything.

Support from Southampton Solent University

Although Southampton Solent University may not be able to offer you a place in our own student residences, we do provide a free contract-checking service to help you make informed decisions when renting privately. This service is available to all students, including apprentices, and is designed to help you understand the terms of your tenancy agreement before you sign. It also allows you the opportunity to ask if any complaints have been received regarding a specific landlord or agency.

The contract checking service can help you:

  • Identify any unfair or unclear clauses.
  • Understand your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
  • Clarify what is included in your rent (e.g. bills, furnishings).
  • Ensure your deposit is protected in a government-approved scheme.

You can access this service through the University’s Accommodation Office. It’s a valuable resource to help you avoid common rental issues and feel confident in your housing choices.
