About the course

This digital technology solutions apprenticeship is the latest standard to be offered here at Solent. Higher and degree apprenticeships give you (or your staff) the opportunity to earn a recognised university qualification while making an essential contribution within the workplace. Apprentices are full-time employees at their sponsoring organisation, and spend one day each week completing assignments or attending lectures. A degree apprenticeship lasts between three and six years.

As a digital technology solutions apprentice you will learn skills that are relevant to your specific job role. You’ll be guided by a curriculum that has been developed in association with BT, HP, IBM, GSK and a range of other household name businesses. Depending on which route you and your employer choose, you will have the opportunity to earn valuable industry accreditations from CISCO, the EC-Council, SAS and Oracle.

Upon graduation, you will be able to manage and implement technology solutions within your workplace. Available routes of study include business analysis, data analysis, cyber security, IT consulting, network engineering, software engineering and digital marketing.

Digital Marketer – This pathway focuses on developing content and applications that can attract or engage customers. It covers e-commerce, analytics, content, development, project management and performance analysis.

Software Engineer – A software engineer needs to be able to design, develop and test high-quality software solutions. This role requires apprentices to apply engineering principles at all levels of the development process. This includes requirement gathering, analysis, initial design, development and security auditing. Software engineers will typically be working as part of a larger collaborative team and will have responsibility for specific portions of software projects.

Network Engineer - The primary role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation. On this route you will learn to maintain high levels of network performance and availability for users. Network configuration, cloud computing, network administration, data security and monitoring tools are covered in depth, leaving you in an excellent position to give technical advice at all levels of your organisation.

Data Analyst - The role of a data analyst is to collect, organise and study data that can provide insight into a business’s activities. This data is then compiled and used to inform decision making at all levels of the business. This route will teach you to manage, cleanse and aggregate data across your organisation’s network infrastructure. You’ll also graduate with a good understanding of data structures, software development procedures and the tools used to undertake analytical studies.

Business Analyst - Business analysts are responsible for assessing the impact of change; capturing, analysing and documenting requirements; and working with stakeholders to deliver projects that meet business requirements. They work closely with developers and designers, ensuring that the applications they produce meet the expectations that were briefed into the team.

Cyber Security Analyst - A cyber security analyst is responsible for the implementation, maintenance and support of the security controls that protect an organisation’s systems and data assets. You will acquire a broad understanding of network infrastructure, software and data management; learning to identify where potential threats and hazards may occur.

Earn a degree while working full-time and graduate without any tuition loans to repay. It works for employers too – get financial support to upskill existing staff or take on new hires.

What does this course lead to?

You will be well supported as you develop your career and prepare to take on more responsibility within the workplace. You’ll leave the course with a nationally recognised undergraduate degree - BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions – as well as your digital technology solutions apprenticeship qualification.

Combined, these qualifications are the ideal way to demonstrate competence for more senior roles within your organisation.


Who is this course for?

To study for an apprenticeship you must be employed by a sponsoring organisation. The specific entry requirements will be agreed with your employer, but are likely to include Level 3 study (A levels, or equivalent).

Tuition fees

Employers will be expected to enter into a formal contract with the University and support employees fully throughout their apprenticeship. This includes allowing day release for the course and paying contributions towards tuition costs and professional body membership fees alongside the employee’s normal wage.

Under the August 2016 funding proposals, post-levy (from May 2017) levy paying employers (businesses with an annual payroll >£3million) will be able to use funds accrued in their digital levy account for payment of the training drawn from the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers.

Non-levy paying business, or those business that need to supplement their digital levy account will need to co-invest 10 per cent of the cost of the training with the government to pay the remaining 90 per cent.

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

Key entry requirements

    To study for an apprenticeship you must be employed by a sponsoring organisation. The specific entry requirements will be agreed with your employer.

    Recommended grades:

    • A GCSE grade 9 - 4 (previously A*-C) or equivalent in English and a GCSE grade 9 - 4 (previously A*-C) or equivalent in mathematics.

    Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include three ‘A’ levels (including maths), although some employers will accept other relevant qualifications or experience.

    Example requirements:

    • 96 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP, a BTEC Diploma at MP, or equivalent.

    We will consider mature students who haven't recently undertaken a formalised course of study at A-level or equivalent, but who can demonstrate relevant workplace or voluntary experience that indicates their ability to complete the course successfully.

    Some employers accept other relevant qualifications or experience, including those from a suitable Level 3 apprenticeship standard.

As an apprenticeship student here at Solent, you’ll have access to our full range of technology labs and software packages. These include our CISCO certified networking and security labs, the E-C Council lab, media technology labs, development centres and usability testing environments.

Just like any other Solent student, you will also have full access to our general facilities. These include a 24-hour library, computer resource centres, bookable study spaces and comprehensive sport/exercise facilities. You’ll also have access to our academic support and career development services.

Graduates will leave the apprenticeship programme with two industry-recognised qualifications: a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree and a degree apprenticeship qualification.
