This course is for all those who want to find out more about marketing – whether you're already working in a role that involves marketing or you think you would like to be in the future. In essence, it answers the question: What is marketing?

With practical assessments put into a workplace context, this is the essential course to enable you to pursue or advance your own career in marketing.

By the end of this qualification you should: 

  • Understand the function of marketing and its role in an organisation’s success. 
  • Understand more about customers and managing customer relationships. 
  • Be able to explain the importance of understanding the organisation’s marketing environment and the impact it has upon an organisation’s ability to satisfy customer needs and wants. 
  • Be able to identify each element of the marketing mix in the context of customer needs and achieving customer satisfaction. 
  • Be able to confidently apply the marketing mix to a range of different organisational sectors and contexts.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2020/21 academic year are:
UK and EU part-time fees: £280 per module or £550 annual fee
International part-time fees: Students from outside the EU are usually unable to obtain a visa for part-time study. Please visit our visas and immigration page for more information.

Key entry requirements

    It is not necessary to have any previous experience or knowledge of marketing.

    For entry onto the foundation certificate you will need to take the CIM online diagnostic test. Please contact us directly using the details provided for information about the diagnostic test.

    If English isn’t your first language, you will also need to demonstrate you have achieved one of the following English language qualifications within the last two years:

    • IELTS Academic Module with an overall score of 6.5 (each component pass mark must be 6.0 or above).
    • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade B or above.
    • Other English language qualifications may be considered.

What you'll study

The course is made up of two modules: 'Marketing Principles' and 'Customer Communications'

Marketing Principles 

  • Discovering marketing
  • The marketing environment
  • The marketing mix.

This module provides an understanding of the key concepts and terminology used in marketing.

By the end of the unit you will have a good knowledge of the concepts and elements which make up the marketing mix, as well as how these various elements are applied in the context of the 21st century marketing environment.

Customer Communications

  • Who are customers? 
  • Communicating with customers
  • Creating a marketing communications plan.

This module provides an understanding of how marketing communications can be used to effectively engage with customers. You’ll explore the purpose of marketing communications and the range of communication tools available, and develop a solid grasp of the process behind launching a successful marketing communications campaign.


Web-based learning

Solent's virtual learning environment provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information.
