About the course

With 30 years’ experience in outdoor leisure, Solent University are experts at producing knowledgeable and industry ready adventure management graduates. Combining the practical elements of adventure sports management with essential business management skills, this programme is well suited to those who are looking to enter the sports tourism, leisure or outdoor entertainment industry.

BA (Hons) Adventure and Outdoor Management scored 100% overall satisfaction for NSS 2019 and 2020.

The curriculum was constructed with vital transferable business skills in mind. Whether it be finance, human resources or site management, this course aims to equip learners with the knowledge they need to succeed in managerial roles.

The beginning of the course covers a range of topics and aims to give learners a broad knowledge of the industry. During the second year students are encouraged to explore their particular areas of interest through application to assessments and research projects. In the third year of study, students are able to specialise and pursue optional modules that relate to their desired career.

Students are also offered the opportunity to undertake flexible work placements before the end of year two, encouraging the development of real-world skills in a ‘live’ industry setting. This placement can also be carried out abroad, which is ideal for those considering employment overseas at the end of their degree.

For students wishing to develop their practical outdoor coaching, we provide access to exclusive discounts in a range of water and land-based national governing body awards (NGBs). These are optional and offered outside of the course programme as part of extracurricular enrichment activities in partnership with our local outdoor centres. Students are also given guidance on how to pursue these additional qualifications through work experience and engagement with Solent's outdoor clubs and societies to maximise career opportunities after graduation.

Joe Nilsson, graduate now director of sales and business development at X-treme Video

  • The creativity for business module has been my favourite part of the course. The open, 'anything's possible' mentality in the discussions coerces some good ideas out of everyone. The same goes for the assignments, but importantly it's all still related back to realistic business settings. Good stuff!

    Matt Burnham, Student

  • The depth and variety of subjects in this course are fantastic. The management knowledge and practical experience have given me the confidence to forge ahead in my career. With the help I received from dedicated tutors, everything is now possible!

    Rebecca Wootton, Graduate

  • I really enjoyed doing the dissertation- I found something I was interested in and felt passionate about researching the area (Adventure Therapy) and practising interviewing techniques.

    Sarah Murphy, current student

  • The course is pretty much split into the outdoor side and the management side. Personally, I love the management side. More specifically the HR side and Health & Safety. My interest within these subjects has led to me doing my dissertation around H&S in outdoor education. I’ve gained so much at Solent from qualification to communication and research skills to confidence.

    Sophie Dalton, current student

  • This course provided me with a solid understanding of the watersports and leisure industry. Allowing me to develop in my own way by providing the freedom to choose modules in the second year, it gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in a sport that I love (surfing) and see it in an academic context. Thanks to the course and staff at Solent I now feel confident enough to further my studies by embarking on a postgraduate course.

    Thomas Goulding, Graduate
