About the course

This dynamic course will challenge you to develop all the skills you need for a career in air travel, tourism and airport management. From foundation year to your final year, you will gain insight into a range of topics such as airport operations, security, safety and risk management, sustainable development, changing consumer behaviour, international standards and impact of emerging markets.

You’ll develop your management expertise, resilience and people skills, and explore management on regional, national and international scales – becoming proficient in all aspects of this complex profession.

Taught by experts with ongoing research and strong ties to the industry, including local players such as Cunard and Carnival, you will also be able to benefit from a programme of guest lectures from key players in the industry – informing your learning with the latest debates and best practice, and providing the opportunity to apply your knowledge to practical challenges.

And a wide range of embedded field trips including local sites and international destinations such as Bruges, Athens or Belfast – as well as the option to undertake a year’s study abroad – you’ll build a globalised understanding of the fascinating tourism industry and air travel’s critical role.

If you apply for this course with a placement year, you have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry between your second and third years.

What does this course lead to?

This new course will prepare you for an exciting and varied career within the air travel and tourism industry, with graduates from Solent’s existing tourism courses finding management jobs with leading cruise specialists such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Others have pursued a career in heritage and cultural venues such as Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, while students have also set up their own businesses to freelance around the world.

Who is this course for?

Solent’s international airline and airport management degree is ideally suited for those seeking to develop their all-round management and interpersonal skills whilst focusing on developing their leisure, air travel and tourism knowledge.

If you are looking for a highly practical and applied degree to hone skills which are highly sought after within the industry – while becoming a specialist in air travel, tourism and airport management – then this is the course is for you. 

There is no requirement to have previously studied air travel or tourism management, but a desire to learn more and an interest in local, national and international air travel and the wider leisure industry is essential.

Optional costs

On embedded trips, travel, accommodation and planned meals are covered by your course fees.

Additional expenses such as meals outside the itinerary, incidentals such as refreshments and souvenirs are at your own expense as well as travel to and from the departure point.

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into year two or three may be considered for this course.
  • Alternative entry on this course is available through the Tourism and Event Foundation Year.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


Students are encouraged to make use of the 24 hour library throughout their studies. The library features a fully networked resource centre equipped with both Apple and Microsoft workstations and a selection of private group working spaces.

We provide a stimulating learning environment and access to state-of-the-art resources to help you make the most of your time with us. Flexible spaces, Wi-Fi facilities and learning zones all contribute to our lively and contemporary study environment at Solent.

International study or work placements are embedded into second year of study for six months or whole year.
