About the course

Solent’s BA (Hons) Marketing programme will help prepare you for a varied career as a professional marketer – driving growth, increasing brand awareness and delivering high-quality marketing materials for businesses of all types and sizes.

You’ll be supported in developing a comprehensive understanding of marketing theory combined with practical application. You’ll study the key concepts of consumer behaviour and insight, marketing strategy, effective marketing planning and decision making, marketing communications, and creative digital technologies, focused on engaging global audiences.

The degree also helps you develop into a flexible marketer. Integration of personal, professional and transferable skills throughout the course help support your progression and development as an individual, within a team and as a learner – attributes that will enable you to be adaptable in today’s fast-moving job market.

Employability is embedded in the curriculum. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with employers and work on live client briefs and real-world projects at all levels. Extensive links with the business community, marketing groups and industry associations are continuously being established to ensure the degree is relevant to the modern marketing environment and current industry best practice. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend guest lectures and will be encouraged to take part in networking opportunities, vital for a successful future career in the marketing profession.

In addition to a traditional degree, the marketing programme also offers you access to a high level of professional qualifications. Additional qualifications include the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), PRINCE2 project management and Google Analytics. 

If you apply for this course with a placement year, you have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry between your second and third years.

Optional costs: 

  • £195 for annual registration fee and assessment fee per module to sit the CIM exam for the Certificate in Professional Marketing.
  • £175 to sit the PRINCE2 certification as part of the Project Management in Business unit.

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into year two or three may be considered for this course.
  • Alternative entry to the course is available through the Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


You will have full access to our general facilities. These include a 24-hour library, computer resource centres, bookable study spaces and comprehensive sport/exercise facilities. You’ll also be able to benefit from our academic support and career development services.

Students will also make use of the Sim Venture and Markstrat simulation games.

Professional qualifications are offered alongside this degree, giving students the chance to earn Chartered Institute of Marketing, Institute of Direct Marketing PRINCE2 and Google Analytics awards.

  • As director of GoPhysio, I was very excited to be part of the live client brief programme at Solent University. We gave the students a creative task for their real-life consultancy project; to develop a service aimed at generating a new market for our physiotherapy provision. Industry specialists mentor and assess your work. Guest speakers are common and the course has its own marketing networking events where you’ll engage with employers and industry figures.

Students often attend industry events as part of their professional accreditations and have presented at both internal and external conferences, with academic staff and on their own.


During the course you’ll have the option to carry out a work placement year, offering you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience before going on to your final year of study.

You’ll also be encouraged to find work experience through the core Personal and Professional Development units, aided by the course team’s professional contacts.
