Tell us a little about your career so far.

Leaving Solent, I struggled to get a foothold as the COVID pandemic had closed publishing houses and networking doors. So, I freelanced as a children's book illustrator, illustrating three books for a local author and launching my own art business. In 2023, I joined an MA in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge, graduating with a Distinction. I even travelled to Italy for the Bologna Book Fair, where my portfolio caught publishers' and agents' attention.

What are you doing now, and what does it involve?

I'm now represented by the Bright Agency for children's picture books, and I'm working towards a PhD in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, exploring how picture books represent disability in children's literature.

What do you enjoy most about being an illustrator?

What I love most is creating unique characters, then exploring who they are inside and outside the story: their likes, dislikes, quirks and morals. From there, I build a whole visual world around them: their everyday objects, pets and surroundings.

What was the best thing about your course lecturers?

Solent teachers go above and beyond to tailor their experience, connections and knowledge to your interests. A tutor's industry connection got me a portfolio review in London with creative directors and publishers at Bonnier Books UK. I've received invaluable, honest feedback that shaped my early career.

Did your studies help prepare you for a career in the industry?

Definitely. In second year, we illustrated a poem into a book, mentored by a published children's author and illustrator. This was my first real taste of the industry. In third year, I wrote and illustrated my own picture book for my Final Major Project, which sparked my career as a children's book illustrator and author.

What's your favourite Solent memory?

My favourite memory is the evening showcases, where art and design students came together to share work or celebrate Halloween and Christmas. It was brilliant fun spending time with friends and lecturers outside of taught sessions.

What did you take away from your time at Solent?

I took away the day-to-day studio life, helping and supporting friends, and a genuine sense of community. The friends I made at Solent are still my closest friends today.

What tips would you give to someone wanting a career in your industry?

Keep creating. Carry a sketchbook everywhere and draw the people, places and stories you come across. It'll shape your style and help you nail characters' features, expressions and movements. Don't compare yourself to others. Focus on your own creative journey and have fun with it
