Luke Resoun

Job title:Individual Giving and Relationships Manager

Employer:Coastal Jazz and Blues Society

Studied:BA (Hons) Sociology

Did you get any opportunities to get practical experience during your studies?

In our Applied Sociology in the Community module, we represented local and international charities, taking ownership of a full fundraising event. This was a great experience for me as I was coming from a more practical background. It allowed me to use my knowledge and expertise to really have an impact on the event and make it a success.

Tell us a little about your career so far

I currently work as Individual Giving and Relationships Manager for a non-profit organisation (NPO) in the music industry based in Vancouver (Canada). This NPO is called Coastal Jazz and Blues Society and produces the annual International Jazz Festival in Vancouver. It attracts around 300,000 people each year and we're the province’s largest non-profit music producer.

What’s a typical working day?

My working day varies according to the type of events we have coming up. Right now, I’m working on the 2023 International Jazz Festival. As I work in fundraising, I’ve planned several fundraiser events throughout the 10-day event, and I’ve trained volunteers to help us collect donations. I am also currently planning next year’s strategy, so I can pitch for a better budget to carry out more extensive fundraising activities.

Studying at Solent reignited my passion for learning and working towards goals. It was a great experience having so much freedom to explore such a wide range of topics.

What tips would you give to someone wanting to start a career in your industry?

Just hold yourself to a high standard, working within this sector means that you often have to produce high-quality work on a lower budget than if you worked in the private sector. However, the result is always much more satisfying, and the community who benefits from your actions gives you a great sense of pride.

What’s next for you?

Seeing how Canada goes! I am here for two years and eventually, I’d like to set up a consultancy firm within the next five years.
